87 v1500 heater question

So I've been having problems with the heater in my truck. The first problem was that it wouldn't blow hot. I replaced the thermostat with a 195degree piece, the heaters hoses going to the heater core are hot. I finally noticed that the cable that controls the temp has a broken tab which isn't fully shutting the blend door. My other problem is that I have air blowing out all the vents when the defrost is on. I noticed that the rod coming over that actuated the change from defrost to heat doesn't move at all. Is it just a cable that I need to replace to fix that problem or what?
