You can juck up your truck with a floor jack at the center of the rearend, the pumpkin and get both wheels off the ground. Spin one wheel the other should spin in the same direction.

jack up the rear and spin one of the wheels. If the other wheel spins in the same direction, it is a posi.
I don't know how you would tell if it is a locker or something else other than by pulling off the differential cover. |

Take the fill plug out and dip in your finger, taste it. A one legger does not have much of a kick to it, but a posi BAM!!! kick it up a notch!! A posi has twice the kick.
Just kidding

I will pass on tasting it. As bad as it smelled no thanks. LOL After jacking it up just enugh to get the wheels off of the ground this is what I found. If you turn the right wheel to the left the left wheel turns in the opposite direction.

On some vehicles I've seen that the transmission
needs to be in gear (so that the driveshaft won't turn) because the differential will cause the same response from the wheels otherwise. I don't know if this is true with GM's, but I've witnessed it with limited slip diffs. on other vehicles. Best thing is to get ready to change your gear oil, and pull the cover off. |
