Stainless intermediate brake hose?

Hi all,

I'm working on a disc conversion on my '70 and can't seem to find a stainless flexible hose to replace the frame to differential hose in the rear. I don't see the point in having stainless lines at the calipers if there's a rubber hose before the fluid gets there. Also, I'm trying to decide if I want to replace the 1/4" line to that hose with 3/16". I'd rather not do AN fittings if I can avoid it either.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

Any local high pressure hose company should be able to make whatever you want , try NAPA or GOODYEAR . many times the local hose shops can build what you want cheaper than they can be purchased online , buy American ,buy local !

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

AN fittings not required, even if you go to 3/16 lines. Just to be clear, stock would be 3/16" lines on the FRONT brake circuit only. Personally, I would to the 3/16" front lines, there is a reason the factory did it that way. If you don't, expect to have to monkey with the prop valve to get things balanced. If you are using a factory prop valve (i.e. non-adjustable), then I'd definitely switch to the 3/16" lines. Will it work with all 1/4"? Yes, but, that's what I'd do.

Concur with your comment, the stainless hose replacements are a bit more show than go, not really necessary - but NEW quality replacement rubber hoses should be considered necessary every once in a while. Understand you're going new regardless because you're doing a conversion - but just thought I'd mention. I'd personally go with rubber hoses and call it a day. Stock look, good perf, save a couple $.

Even on Disc/Disc? From what I've been reading the Drums need more fluid volume, hence the 1/4" lines, but discs benefit from higher pressure that 3/16" line gives.

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

As far as pressure/volume tube diameter (3/16 vs 1/4) makes no difference.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

That looks like it could work. Stupid question though. what are the funny looking blocks on the fronts? Is that for the caliper or the hard line? It looks like it's for the tee to the rears on the other one.

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

I have a question about disc brake conversion....I have a 3/4 ton and noticed the all disc brake conversion kits go with a 6 lug caliper...will that make a difference on capacity?...I figure with a big truck you need the 8 lugs....?..

The block end goes to caliper for a 72 disc caliper that I put on the 71. It's the bango connection. I haven't had any problems so for except I had the wrong ones sent first not thinking the 71 & 72 were differant my fault but he made them good. He will do custom length also.

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

Oh, the banjo fitting, right. I didn't realize the older ones looked like that. I'm used to seeing the the newer stuff where the fitting looks like a magnifying glass.

How did you hook up your rear tee fitting? That one looks like it has a through bolt. Mine is attached to the rear axle housing with a clip like this one http://www.classicparts.com/47-70-Tr.../#.UqitBGRDs-M

I thought 71 and 72 were the same as well. How can you tell the difference?

Gotcha, thanks for the pictures, that helps greatly. I was just on ebay looking at the hoses you bought and will be buying from them as well. I have a 69 frame with a 71-72 front disc. I assumed the calipers were the same so when i went to oreilly i just said i need 72 calipers. I assume all will fit even if it is a 71 front end instead of a 72? Do you know?

Yes if U used a 71 front brakes then the 72 will bolt right up but as stated the hoses are differant. 72's are cheaper also, calipers and such.

Wow, that is crazy. I did not realize that and good thing I hadnt pulled the trigger yet on the buying SS hoses. I was going to buy from inline tube, but have heard they are somewhat slow at shipping and if I can get the red ones like you got that would be my preference. Thanks for the help.

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

Ok, so based on what Jocko said after I re-read his post a couple days later , and what I've read here http://www.hydratechbraking.com/braketech2.html, because I want hydroboost eventually when I do an IFS, but that's down the line. Turns out, Danchuck and Eckler's and CPP also make a braided rear hose, but the tees aren't quite right.

I think I know what I'm going to do, assuming if I order a front line kit for 72 C10 it's 3/16". And I'm going Disc/Disc if I forgot to mention that.

The plan.

Fronts
-Corvette style M/C with vacuum booster, 9/16" and 1/2" fittings.
-mod or fab line from front M/C port to front tee.
-71-72 3/16" pre-bent lines from front tee to spot by control arms.
-flexible lines to D52 type calipers.

Rears
-short 3/16" line from rear M/C to adjustable proportioning valve.
-fab or find 3/16" line from front to rear.
-custom hose with proper ends for stock tee (I've read about guys trying to adapt the tee that comes on the others I mentioned and it doesn't work so well.)
-3/16" lines from tee to near wheels.
-new tabs for flex lines to ls1/C5 calipers.

Easier done than said right?

Andy, Which brake caliper are you running with the 72 brake hoses you got? Thanks.

71-72 calipor's will inter change with which ever U want to run.

The 72 calipor has the round Bango fitting as the 71 has the square fitting. The square fitting will not fit the 72 calipor unless U route the hose to the front of the hub.

Re: Stainless intermediate brake hose?

Okay, so let me ask you this. Since I got the 73-87 caliper listed above, will the exact brake hoses you got fit the caliper below? I am afraid since the hoses you have are shaped like a Q on the end they wont fit this caliper? Since it has a ridge all around the outside edge.
