LWB to SWB drive shaft question
I have a 71 C10 with a 350 engine and 350 tranny. I'm thinking about converting my long bed to a short bed truck. I've looked at few threads but could never get a solid answer about the front drive shaft. After shortening the frame what options are there for the drive shaft from the transmission to the carrier bearing? Do you just have the old driveshaft shortened 12" or is there another driveshaft that'll work with our truck. I want to keep my 2 piece drive shaft.
Any help would be appreciated. |

I turned my lwb into a short bed.
What trans are you using ? Y would you want to keep a two piece ? I will post pic of mine tomorrow so you can see how short it is, When you cut 12 inches from the center and then I moved my motor back 2 Inches and then added another 6 inches to the tran by going to a 4l80. So keep all of those things in mind |

I had mine shortened 12" in the front shaft and it works fine but I'm looking for a one piece driveline.

If you're running airbags I think you need a 2 piece shaft.

If you shorten the front shaft 12 " you will be fine as long as you don't relocate or change anything else. Its not a bad idea to make sure your slip joint or if you're running an automatic your front yoke isn't jammed all the way in. If your truck drives fine now it will drive fine after the driveline is shortened but when you lower a stock truck it usually takes up most of the slip movement the factory engineered into it for suspension travel. If you're having it shortened anyway its a great time to address that but if it's not jammed all the way in when you're at ride height its fine.

Why not cut the truck down, get the trans in, and take measurements of your truck for the driveline shop?
That takes 100% of the guesswork out of the equasion. You can run a one piece shaft with bags. If you want to go really low with really big tires you need a tunnel not a driveshaft that is running over 3* in the middle.
