72 Auto crossmember removal

Ok this maybe a real dumb question but i cant see how to remove the transmission crossmember. With it wedged between the fram rails. how does it come out.
Its been way to long since Ive worked on a totally stock frame and just cant remember how it comes out.
All 4 bolts are removed and it slide forward and backwards. So before i can replace the tranny i need the crossmember removed. Or is there another way?

I could not remove mine when I swith to 200 4r tranny. what I did was just slided as far back as i could. if I remember correctly took 1 bolt off from the fuel line to make easy on the passeger side. no big deal.

i used a port a power to gently slightly spread the frame rails to remove and install crossmembers for tranny// with alot of work and a very large heavy hammer it is possible to remove

My frame has a lips bent into the bottom frame rail. It was about a foot or so back from where it was mounted. Just pushed it back to that and it dropped out.

Shucks....it wasn't a big deal, once the cab was off...

sneezys 72 has the idea.. i just used a hammer and tapped the drivers side back( which moved th epassenger side forward) and by the time it came to the spot where the frame is bent it came right out

Hey guys. I have a '72 crossmember for my 200-4R swap from a 3 speed manual. I cut out the original bell housing crossmember. My '67 didn't have a transmission crossmember. I don't know the secret to installing the '72 crossmember. Any suggestions for a retired guy?

Ron the 200R4 is the same [as far as mounting and the crossmembers go] as the turbo 350. if I remember it is a little father back however than the ones would be for the TH350. But I also seem to remember the back frame holes becoming the front for the crossmember then you can drill two new ones if you want some just ride with two bolts.

I got the crossmember in but not bolted.
I will put the motor in and line everything up then drill new holes.
It's been 30+ years since I have done this work and I forgot many things.

There are two sets of front and back holes punched in the frame for powerglide, turbo 350 or turbo 400 trans length. If you use a stock crossmember just set it up at an angle far enough back so that you can finagle it up into the frame and turn it straight and work it forward into place. A big hammer or dead blow hammer works wonders at that time. Put in all 8 bolts with the nuts loose before you tighten any up because you usually have to jiggle the thing around a bit to get them in. I've had the one in my 71 out more than once and it's a struggle but you will figure it out.

BFH worked for me , the frame rails will spread with some persuasion
