Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

Checked today and I have 410's in the rear according to my sticker. Did a few mods this weekend. Still got some tidying up on the wiring to do and my evilbay lighting harness is not so great. low and high beams stay on all the time. anyway here are a couple pics. Got new battery cables on the way to finish the look of how its supposed to and not all rigged like it was.

Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

Did a little bit more to it since I got my battery cable kit in. Still need to install the cable from the solenoid to the starter but the wiring dosent look like a bunch of monkeys wired it anymore. Well not as bad anyway. Also got my headlight relay kit all in and wired properly. Had all 3 connections swapped on the plug that plugs into the original harness swapped. Moved them around and now i have shiny halogen lights again.

Got some interior work done and Changed my cab lights. Yeah my welding is not the best. Im a little rusty but as soon as this spool of wire runs out im converting it to regular wire and adding sheilding gas.

Just realized i never posted any pics on here of my front end extravaganza. I was just going to replace my headlight adjusters but ended up doing a bit more. LOL

Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

Well did some more work on the truck this weekend. Got the pitman arm replaced and my last battery cable on that goes from my external solenoid to the starter. Better battery cables definatley make a huge difference. Also got my front wheels shined up a bit. Cleaned and painted the ugly rusted hub caps and replace the lug nuts. The big Crome lug nuts stripped evertime i tried to tighten them so I chased all the studs with a die or rather i taught my son how to do it and let him take care of it for me. He did most of the pitman arm as well but i made the mistake and let him near the xbox and that was that. LOL ANyway here are a couple rim pics.

Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

So I havent updated this in awhile. My son and myself have been doing a few things to it in the nice weather we have been having lately. Added some new front shocks. Previous ones were DOA!! And were in the middle of a 90 model core support swap. The 90 model core support had a great place with nuts in the core support already to mount my starter relay so I move it up there and Im in the process of making a Relay harness for the 90 model lights. Im not sure about where im mounting them is decent so im open to suggestions there. the big red junction block is temporary in favor of a second battery when i get one. Still cant decide on GMC or Cherolet Grille though.

Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

Got some more wiring done tonight and changed up my location a bit. I think it looks alot better but still need to clean up my wiring and finish it up. Ran out of time so had to take some pics in the dark. Got more wiring stuff on the way so I can finish it up. Ran out of loom and still waiting on the male H4 connector. They are a pain to find unwired.

Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

Well everything is hooked up for the relay harness and lights. Works pretty good. Instead of running a 3rd relay I ran a diode across the signal legs of the relay to keep my low beam lights on while my high beams are on. Now to tidy up the wiring with some loom and put the rest of the front end together.

Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

Well Almost done. Got everything tidied up and the lower valance painted and put on. Trying to straighten my bumper from my over sight of a pole at the gas station. Dinged the very corner of it. Stupid me to ruin a great looking bumper. Anyway once I find a grille ill be installing it. Thinking of getting a used one and just painting it all black to see what that looks like Vs. the chrome. What do yall think?

For the grille, I would get some cheap aftermarket parts and put a billet insert in there (GMC style). I think that looks sharp. The aftermarket part will not have the relief for the GMC in it exactly, so you can run that grille before cutting it for the insert if you need to.

I actually have a GMC grill already with part of the insert already cut out. I guess I could try that.

Well of to the painters it went. Gonna get my clown doors with mirror holes painted to match and hung and aligned and my fender fixed from the unfortunate pole that hit my bumper while i was trying to pull int a gas pump. Darn thing jumped right out in front of me i swear!! More pics to come as it progresses.

Re: Project "Haulin Crap" 1986 CC dually.

Hey Monte! I have an 83 that I'm switching to a 91 front end. This weekend I just sourced a 91 harness from a burb. Can I just splice it on to my factory 83 harness near the firewall. My 83 harness is in storage (due to a divorce) are the wires the same color. Also, what did you do exactly with the relays and the diode? Thanks in advance!

Yes you can in fact thats the way most people do it. I believe you need to combine the dark blues of the new harness at the firewall as the original only has one i believe. If memory serves that is. I cheated and cut my turn signals off my old harness and spliced in the newer style turn signals and running lights to the original harness. I however didnt have much of the original harness left. Which was another reason I added the relay harness. PM me if you run into any issues. Ill be glad to help.

Scored a set of electric mirror doors. Going to pic them up tonight. Not sure if I'll use em or not but if not then may later when I do a repaint. Thinking the stock mirrors may be better for towing since their larger.
