Exhaust Flange Gasket Required?

I have a 1966 C10 longbed with a 250 I6 from a 1974 vehicle. I am trying to hookup a new exhaust front pipe (Walker 48111) and was wondering if a flange donut is required with this pipe? The pipe is formed at the manifold end to look like a donut gasket and if I add a donut gasket the flange will not reach the studs as the donut makes the connection too thick. Plus, there is no flare on the pipe so the donut does not seal well there. It looks to me like I just forgo the gasket and use the pipe as is. I was just wondering if anyone else has done this.

Sounds like the pipe has a ball flange. If it was supposed to use a donut, it would look like a trumpet.

So a ball flange requires no gasket?

Yes, but ball flange is usually supposed to mate with trumpet.



Put it together and and see if it leaks.

I'm replaceing a similar exhaust with the same walker head pipe, hopefully this weekend. I bought the doughnut just in case, just waitin on the pipe.

I'll post up pics in the Official John Lee Jr thread but all the parts catalogs show a doughnut for use on the 230 engine at the manifold head pipe junction. 250 oughta be the same.

I figured the doughnut gasket is needed since the walker 48111 does not appear (poor catalog photos) to come with a flange to bolt to the mainfold.

I guess if it leaks, it'll need either some goo to seal it (potentially less prefered) or maybe better a mod to trim, add a trumpet and then install the doughnut and flange.

The pictures are poor but the pipe does not come with the flange. The flange is sold separately as Walker 31851. I already had a flange so I did not buy a new one. The Walker flange is slightly different than mine so I may purchase one to see if it makes any difference. I'll try to post a picture of mine later today.

Cool. My pipe is supposed to be in Fri or Sat so I'm jumpin on the exhaust replacment this weekend. Subscribed here for sure.

looks to me like it'd seal up good with that ball end getting squeezed by the manifold and collar.

After studying it, I thought so too. I was just wondering if anyone has done that and did it work. If it's not correct, what is the correct way?

Looks like a nicely made compression style fitting. A bit of Copper sealant if you're not sure but I'll bet it'll seal all by itself with moderate torque on the flange nuts.

Well, it's up that way now as I am installing the complete system. Need to go get a 2" clamp now. Unfortunately I can't start the engine yet to test it until I finish the wiring.

hello friends, my 66 230 l6 has no flange. I want to know if it's the photo that corresponds to my model. exhaust manifold my three screws

When I used the walker head pipe on my I6, the walker head pipe came with the tulip shape to the end. Looks like the pictures in post 8 above. Basically, the tulip shape eliminates the need for a doughnut gasket to seal the pipe.

Slipped the manifold ring over it, clamped down the two nuts on the manifold and perfect seal....no doughnut required. If your head pipe has no tulip shape, it probably needs the doughnut to seal up.
