Help with power steering brackets

Hello all, I'm trying to install power steering on the 72 stepside. It's a V8/TH350 auto. I pulled the steering box and pump from a working '71 C/10.

My problem is I have a later model V8, maybe 80's or 90's? and am going to need a different bracket to mount the pump. Can anyone tell me what bracket/year range I'm looking for? Thanks for any help!

Re: Help with power steering brackets

Thanks for that asolde. Those look like the correct '72 brackets, but they won't work on my later model engine. I think I need something from the 80's or 90's and am wondering if someone else has run into this.

Re: Help with power steering brackets

Those power steering pump brackets will work on your engine, but you're missing a little bracket that bolts to the outer corner of the left cylinder head, using the front header bolt.

Re: Help with power steering brackets

Thanks, Zach! What should I be asking for, since I need to buy one?

Re: Help with power steering brackets

Bigred is correct. Those are the ones you need.

On your pump, the bolt hole right up by the filler cap lines up with the threaded hole in the front of your cylinder head. You'll need some sort of little spacer (stack of washers works) since you don't have air conditioning bracket behind the power steering bracket.

The long slotted ear on the side of the pump lines up with the threaded hole in your water pump.

Pretty much any GM small block car or truck from the mid 70s up through serpentine equipped vehicles can supply the missing little bracket that goes on the back.

Actually, there were two different designs of pre-serpentine long water pump power steering brackets.

The first style was used up until 1976 and uses a "cradle" bracket that bolts through an un-threaded mounting boss on the water pump.

The second design was used from 1977 & up. This one has the bracket bolted to the front of the PS pump and it bolts into a threaded boss on the water pump.

As far as I know, the various brackets & parts are not interchangeable between the two styles. And they have to be used with the corresponding design of long water pump in order to line up correctly.

DGulliver, From what I can see in your pics, it looks like you have the 77-up bracket for the front of the pump and are missing the outer support as Tx Firefighter pointed out. However, it also looks like you might have the 76 & older style water pump with the un-threaded mounting boss.

Re: Help with power steering brackets

That's a long water pump in the first photo.

I don't think the short water pump brackets work.

I know. Both of those diagrams I posted are for long water pumps.

I agree ... he needs to use brackets meant for a long water pump. But as I posted, there are two different styles of brackets for long water pumps and the parts between those don't interchange either.
