That's the 1st one I have ever seen. I guess napco would have done the conversion?? Also the shackle's are mounted up front kinda wiered.. Killer looking truck though..

I think that someone turned it into a 4x4, it doesn't look like the frontend that NAPCO usually used it looks like a mid 70's style, matching the motor. Also look at the gear housing and the spring, it looks like the spring is setting on the housing, also look at the shock mount it kinda looks cobbled up on the axle.

In 1958 the Napco conversion would have been done at GM.
Something about the front axle does not look correct to me.
The tranfer case shifter does look correct.
I always thought that this is a perfect combination to have but was unaware if the factory ever offered it.
The crossmember for the transfer case would have had rivits instead of bolts to secure it to the frame starting sometime in the 1957 model year.
A very nice truck for someone to restore.

I thought the Cameo's were an integrated cab and bed. That looks to be a regualr Apace model. Have no idea though if they were 4x4 or not though.

Bill, no Cameos were simply fibergalss bedsides installed on normal step side beds. They also used special bumpers and such. I've read that the bumpers on a Cameo project could make or break the deal much moreso than the condition of the bedsides.

Dana 44 front axle = NOT ORIGINAL.

Like it has been said, the Napco front axle has a round diff cover and has "NAPCO" cast into it in fairly large lettering.



Also, notice the tie rod up above the axle, not in front like the dana 44...and there is only one U-bolt on the diff side on the Napco...there are 2 studs there (a la dana 60) that hold where you think the other U-bolt would go, vs. 2 U-bolts on the dana 44.
I believe I read somewhere that the Napco front axle is a modified Eaton HO unit, and it does resemble one.

You could get the Napco Powr-Pak on any truck back then, so yes, you could have gotten an original Cameo conversion from Napco. However, I have only seen a couple of these trucks, and common sense would dictate that back then, 4wd would be put on utilitarian work trucks, not the fancy Cameo. But there are a handful that do exist. Try this website, they have a lot of good info and pictures of Napco trucks:
