new guy again

what up. got a 69 stepside, and ive got some questions. i want a late model ride(front disc, nice ride, etc) and being that i work for the govt, i cant exactly afford to throw down thousands of dollars on the cool aftermarket stuff. here comes the stupid questions,
-later model frame swap possible? ive heard the 80-early 90s frames are nearly the same.
-i am looking at fuel injection and aod trannys as well. looked at 700s, and the 4l80e,obviously the money thing comes into play. if the 700 is built right, is it reliable?
-edelbrock pro flo, does anyone know if the computer has the ability to plug the aod tranny in?
-RANDY, your website has a nice little blue step, you wouldnt happen to know the drop and wheel/tire numbers would you?
thanks all.
matt

Drop it 2 1/2 and 4, add sway bars and the disc kit and the ride will be there. As for the fuel injection either a crate w/inj. or an aftermarket unit would be easiest. From all I've heard it would be simpler to do it this way than a frame swap.I've never done a frame swap or inj tho.

My 72 with discs up front, sway bar with poly bushings, energy suspension body mounts, monroe gas truck shocks, and coil rear with trailing arms is stock height and it is smoother riding than any of my previous 80,81,82,83, or 91 trucks. Does your truck have leaf rear or coil rear??

There are hundreds of Randys on this site, are you talking to me? lol......Looks like a 3/4 drop with 295/50/15's in the rear.

i have an accel digital fuel injection unit with a 700 tranny. with the 700s you have to get one made after 89 because the ones made before then were crap, i forgot the exact problem but they all had it.
im not sure about the edelbrock injection, but the accel has a kit that ties into the tranny so that the computer controls the torque converter. plug your laptop into the ECM and you can decide what RPMs you want the torque converter to lock up at (only in 4th gear) and what throttle position you want it to unlock. as for shift points i think the only adjustment option is on the detent cable, which i keep pretty tight to give the nice hard shifts.
but you definately want to have a well known, maybe even performance tranny shop rebuilt it considerably strong. theyre durability is comparable to the 350s. so yes IF it is built right, it is reliable. but i have heard youre really pushin it around 500+hp

just about all 700r4s are reliable... why wouldnt they be? try and find a late model late 80s - new fuel injected engine. some one might even trade you for your 350 if that is what you got... some people get a parts car from the 90s with 350s and a aod transmission like the 4l60, 700r4 and such.

damn guys, sorry it took me so long to get back here. im on uss tortuga here in VA beach. yeah randy, there is alot of them on your web site. yeah after thinking about it, the frame swap would be a giant pain in the asssss. the front end is just plain bad right now. and its an old city truck, so no power steering, brakes etc. in my teenage days it was cool, anymore it doesnt take me long to get tired of the ride. whos got the best affordable front end upgrades out there? ive seen just about everyone makes something for it. hoping one of you guys has the inside scoop on this.

Welcome from missouri!

I agree...keep the frame. A late model frame really isn't going to be an improvement over the frame on one of these trucks with power disc brakes and a fresh rebuild. Plus coil springs ride better.

you can piece together a disc brake kit for about 400-500 depending on where you get stuff or gmc pauls sells the kit for like 470. for power steerign you need the pump and the box not sure what else. power brakes you can get the booster assembly for like 250. you can get probably everything you need used from people on here
