Started my 72' burb other day just to move it around so its not sitting for long periods of time. Started great, ran fine, no odd noises. I decided to look under the hood after I started it to do a quick visual before I took it down the road.

We just had a bad spell of extremely cold weather(one day the high was only -10,lows were around -30 to -40 at night) so I was looking for freeze plugs leaking,etc... Noticed the fuel pump was shooting gas toward the front of vehicle. What would cause this?

Its the factory fuel pump with inlet/outlet/ and return.

Cold weather is tough on everything under the hood. Is it the fuel pump housing itself or the hoses? Fuel pumps themselves are relatively inexpensive. Might be time to replace it.

I'd chuck a new pump & lines on it. It's an easy job and even if one of the two is not needed it will provide piece of mind.

Change your oil after you change the fuel pump.

I have seen fuel pumps go bad, and when they do they typically leak fuel into the engine. Which goes with out saying, is very bad for your bearings.

If you have any rubber hoses down there that is the first thing I would check for leaks.

Hoses are good. Tried to get a photo of where its leaking. Is there a filter in this pump that may need changed. It seems larger than most mechanical fuel pumps I've seen.

Just replace it.
There is no filter inside, and the holes it is leaking from are just vents.

Not trying to sound rude, but do not run the engine anymore until you replace it with a new one.

I have had an engine ruined when a fuel pump went bad on it, since while it was pumping fuel to the carburetor it was pumping fuel into the oil pan. I think I drained 3 gallons of unleaded out of the oil drain plug, and when all was said and done the bearings were all washed out thus prompting a full rebuild and a new crank shaft.

Pull the dip stick, and smell the oil to see if it smells like gasoline.

I just replaced the fuel pump in my '53 because it sat for a long time and the bladder dried out and busted. As soon as I saw this, I didn't even crank the engine one more time until I changed the pump and the oil. Don't risk it for such a cheap part. The fuel thins the oil and it doesn't protect the bearings, and it's also a fire hazard under the hood. My grandfather's truck burnt up because of a leaking fuel pump.

OK. had to order one. Nobody had the three fitting pump. They all had the two fitting pumps only. Airtex brand for 31.99 at advanced auto parts. Claims to be the only mechanical fuel pump MADE IN USA.hell ya
