Re: Rescued Holmes 440
Nice score!
I'm all up for a tow truck club. Got mine done this past fall after a 3 year back breaking restoration. See my build thread if you need any inspiration: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=448256

Re: Rescued Holmes 440
Another idea for the shifter. Use some penetrating oil on it at the ball. Then remove it. At that point you can get to the shifter rails. Penetrating oil on the front and back of the rails. Carefully work them as far back and forth. I had a 69 that was a virtual twin to Bobs. Was a flood truck. 307 was toast and the brakes were locked tight. but the trans and axle were ok. Patience is the key. Also you will have to take the shifter out to be able to get the top off the trans as you have to partly engage reverse to pull the top.

Re: Rescued Holmes 440
All,
Thanks for the welcome, and the ideas and information. I am all in if you start a tow truck club. Bob - an amazing project and story, and definitely an inspiration. I plan on printing the thread and using it as a guide as I work my way through this truck. I just picked up a derelict '72 GMC that will be a parts donor truck for my '72 GMC Suburban, and a sheet metal donor (mostly the cab parts) for the tow truck. I'm sure I will have more questions, but for now - I'm curious about your wheels. Mine are 16 inch split rims, with 1/2 studs. Are your rims for 1/2 studs, or did you install 9/16? What did they come on originally? I'd like to upgrade the split rims, but keep the vintage look. Thanks again to all, Bill
