Custom Camper factory solenoid?

I just bought a '72 C20 Custom Camper with the 400/402. On the driver's side inner fender right by the P/S reservoir is a Ford style starter solenoid. One wire goes across the radiator support to the battery, one is coiled around the solenoid, and one goes to a little metal relay screwed to the rad support at driver's left lower corner of the radiator. I don't want to rip that stuff out & toss it if it might be factory.....

I believe that your truck may have(or had) the dual battery setup and someone installed the solenoid. Here is a schematic of the dual battery wiring and components so you can compare what the factory did against what you have.

Re: Custom Camper factory solenoid?

Ditto what JimK says - installed such a setup on a 72 C30 Mohome here.

Re: Custom Camper factory solenoid?

That diagram mostly matches up. I have the passenger side junction block still but don't see the driver's side one anywhere. Also missing the battery tray itself but there are a couple of bolts in the radiator support where it might have attached.

Wife is mad that I bought this truck...well actually the '72 C20 that I traded for this truck. My favorite year and I'd never owned one...at this point I'm just hoping to break even. But at least I can say I've owned two '72s. lol

Re: Custom Camper factory solenoid?

The relay looks like the original relay and the two bolts shown in your picture are the the ones used for the right side of the battery box. Someone has obviously installed the starter solenoid.

Re: Custom Camper factory solenoid?

Oh I thought the diagram was showing the starter relay at the lower corner of the aux battery.
