Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
All looks good to me. I have torn many sbc down and found the oil pump sleeve missing, not a biggie. Without a bore scope, the only option aside from pulling the heads would be a spy cam. Good luck.

Ouch! Could you tell what it was? I don't think your flywheel is cracked, not common for a SS, probably just an oil track. See if it will wash off with some brake/parts cleaner.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
On the flywheel, take a wire brush to it. See if that takes it away. On the piston. Ouch!! One thing I find odd is the amount of damage at the top of the piston. You going to rebuild, swap engines or just repair #8? Also I noticed a sliver of something on the oil pump, what was that?

Not sure where to go from here. Guess I need options and or opinions. Originally my hopes and plans were to keep it going, until next year. So I could have time to rebuild my spare motor.

Find a used piston and rod, buy a single ring kit and put it back together.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
So if I pull a piston and rod out of my spare motor. Re ring it, it should work???? Should I hone that cyl? How about the bearings?

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
If it didn't crack the cylinder and score it then yes. New piston and rod will work. But measure the rod bearing dia and the rod throw dia and make sure the bearing clearances are in check. Get a deglazing home and deglaze the cylinder and get the crosshatch in there so the new rings will seat and seal. Clean up any dust with brake clean.
And that flexplate/flywheel is stress cracking. Replace that sucker. Check the valves and valve seats on #8 to be sure. Then go ahead and throw it back together and pray

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
So I guess I should give you guys an update. I took the holidays off from getting the truck back on the road. And after doing a bunch of reading and thinking. I've decided to either send the motor to get rebuilt, or buy a crate engine. I should have my taxes back soon. And I talked the wife into a budget of about $3000 max.
If I rebuild the motor I'd like to do a mild 383. This truck is just a daily driver with some towing once in a while. It's been 20 years since I had an engine rebuilt so can I build one with my budget? If I go with a crate motor I was thinking about the Vortec 5700 GM L31-Rhttp://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12530283 Any thoughts about this motor? I know I'd need a vortec intake manifold. |

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
Wouldn't need an intake, I used a cut-off wheel to slot the center holes on my intake. That lets the 60 degree bolt holes work.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
That works for the swirlport heads from 87-95. But the Vortec heads are different and need a different intake.

Re: Replaced intake gaskets now ticking/knocking?? Help
True I didn't notice that. They say it's designed to fit 1996-2000 full size Chevy/GMC trucks. So it should have true Vortec's. Guess I should double check that.
