Cool air in 73-74 model engine bay
he guys,
I recently went from a 86 Chevrolet Suburban to a 74 GMC Suburban. In the 86 I had an opening behind the grill where I hooked up the cold air for the air cleaner: the hole on the left in this pic had this thing in it but the 74 has no openings in the core support behind the grill. I have taken the air cleaner from my 86 hoping to hook the hose up again...but where do you guys get your cold air in these models?

Ha is that what those holes were for? Drawing air into the engine for the air intake? I always wondered what the reason was for them. But If there is no spot on the core support to hook up the intake hose, you could just run a aftermarket air cleaner?

Hi Jochen.
Didn't the older models ('73&'74) used snorkels as a filter element? That will mean there is no cold air supply from a hole or tube. As you are running on propane, just cut a hole in the core support like the newer originals. Just so that you can use the stock 'thing' in it. |

juk, no...that will still get you warm air in a traffic jam under the hood...
I dont really wanna hack into the from core support, but I think its the only way yo go... will be nice summer project.

My all orginal 74 has a round stamped area next to each headlight where it can be cut out for your cold air snorkel to slide into, Look a little closer......

Can you run the intake over to the corner of the fender where the battery is or is that still going to be too hot? How different are the newer core supports compared to the pre 80's?

My old 74 had the same 'round stamped areas' in between the headlights & radiator.

1973-1975 didn't have cold air from the core support. They just had a fluted end on the air cleaner.
1976 introduced the cold air snorkle/intake, or Outside Air...

I did dual intake air box out of some 4" flexible drier vent tubing and plastic gutter drain adapter.. Riveted it to my air box once I cut it and shaped it to fit the factory cleaner... Basically replicated ramair box but without spending 300$. The other end if the drier vent went to the factory plastic round adapter in the core support with the front face either removed or holes drilled in it.
I couldn't use the setup with the 90 suburban clip as it doesn't have those holes.
