New Member and New Truck

Hi Everyone, first post here and just getting into my early Chevy truck experience. Anyhow, I was given a 72 Custom Camper and my first question is about the color. It sits now as a White and Orange truck. The vehicle ID plate says it came from the factory as a White and Medium Green. I see the green under the outside trim. The dash looks like it has been painted black, green underneath. And most of the inside has been painted orange, along with the engine compartment.

I got it from the second owner who bought it from the original owner in 74 or 76. The second owner said he never did anything and it came with the orange paint.

I guess it could have been in an accident and repainted but it seems like a lot of work to paint the inside. I would'nt think some one would try to restore it after having it from 72 -74ish. It's not a big deal just seems odd and wonder if anyone else has seen something like this? Anyhow, this will be my first question of many more to come. Thanks, John

Re: New Member and New Truck

Welcome, and I've had long term owners forget about things they've done before, but nothing as big as a color change. Also, if a company needed an orange truck and had a green truck they could have painted it when it was nearly new. I've seen new trucks painted nowadays to become a company color because the factory wouldn't do it or the deal was too good to pass up.

Post up some pics and start a build thread so we can all watch the progress.

Here are a few pics. The pin stripping is hand painted also. You can see the green paint in a couple of the pics.

LOL, I didn't even realize they were Ford hubcaps. What type of cap would be standard on this truck?

Re: New Member and New Truck

Yes it appears to be a Highlander model, am I correct? Is there any significance to a C20 Custom Camper Highlander? John

Oh!! and the hubcaps have been removed

Re: New Member and New Truck

You better believe it's significant, I have one!! Ha. Some might not think so - it is just a Custom Deluxe after all, but I'm a plaid nut, maybe I should be a lumberjack. I like the 72 Custom Camper script (and the camper life it conjures) on the door for some reason, and I like the Highlanders, so there you have it. Yes, you have a Highlander, and a very nice one at that. Yours is known as a "package truck" - and a package c, the one with the bells the bells/whistles (tilt, a/c, etc). That's a very cool truck, hope you restore it! Mine's pretty similar to yours, just white with blue plaid and a small block. Enjoy and thanks for sharing.

Re: New Member and New Truck

Went ahead and took the seat and carpet out to get rid of odors. Found a large area of the original color.

Steve - for reference, the pictured wheel covers are PA1s. PO3s are the stock 1/2 ton (or 3/4 ton) bright wheel hub cap with the black paint and blue bow tie, not the highlander full wheel cover.

That would be interesting with avocado plaid. I noted the SPID stated "green" plaid - that's interesting also. I know it means avocado, but I have never seen it labeled as "green" plaid on a highlander, only avocado.
