67 283 to 70's 350 swap?

I have the opportunity to pick up a complete 70s era 350 sbc, casting 3970010 for $100. It's still attached to the auto trans. Supposedly it was rebuilt then sat outside for the last 10 years. Obviously, it would need to be torn down and rebuilt again.

Thinking about rebuilding it, and swapping out my busted 283 in my 67 C20. Can't beat the price, but might be too far gone. Just want something I can drop in without having to make any mods. I'd mate it up with the current 4-spd, granny gear and all. Here's some pics.

Engine patina builds. You might just be onto something.

I'd say no! It looks like somebody snapped the harmonic balancer bolt off, probably the owner trying to turn it over after sitting outside for 10 years.

What's wrong with your 283?

Re: 67 283 to 70's 350 swap?

Every time I finish building a gen 1 small block, I add up what I spent and say to myself, “could have done an LS conversion for that”. I could build my small blocks cheaper than I usually do but I hate to cut corners on engines. Redo old heads for $500, nah lets get cheap new aluminum ones for $1000. A roller cam upgrade, there goes $700. Can’t run stamped rocker arms on this nice cam…. That kind of thinking gets me in trouble.

With that rust hole through the freeze plug I wouldnt hold alot of hope for it. About the only way I would do this is if the owner let you pull it down first. I have motors sitting in the pole barn for over 15 years now that still have solid freeze plugs in it.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Thanks guys. I'm sure I can find a better starting point.

Crack in the block. Very sad. Just got it running too.

Check craigslist should be able to find a complete running SBC for about $250. It might not be a a early 350. At least around here kids always build a 305 then decide they want a 350. Or dirt track racers build them a new engine then sell their old one.
