Non A/C Heater Box Tip "Mouse-Proof"
I pulled the complete heater system out of my 68 when I got it because mice got in and ruined everything. Living in a rural area mice and what we call pack rats are a big problem, they ate into my wife's new Subaru too. After installing a new core into the firewall enclosure, I stuffed copper scrubbing pad material around the core inlet and outlet to seal the big gap that is normally there ?

Normally there is a moldable sealer hand applied around that area (black sealer like modeling clay).
What's the long term strategy for dealing with the mice/pack rats? K

The air inlet is probably the worst for letting them in. I tried steel wool, same idea, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Re: Non A/C Heater Box Tip "Mouse-Proof"
I know it sounds crazy, but it absolutely works. We have a large RV that we leave at a campground all year long. The place is surrounded by woods so there have always been mice trying to get in to everyones campers when it gets cold. We used poison, etc., until one of our friends found something on the internet. You take peppermint oil, (only place to buy it is at a health food shop) and put a drop or two on cotton balls and just lay them where you don't want mice. It irritates the mice and they won't come anywhere near it. We have never had a mouse since and it doesn't have a bad smell and isn't toxic. The stuff is amazing and the best rodent repellant I have ever seen.

What I have done for years it put cheap dryer sheets (from a dollar store) all over in the cab and engine compartment. I do this on my 68 and also my plow truck. I NEVER get mice!

gipper, That is is one of the things we used also. Dryer sheets, mouse bait and moth balls (lavender don't stink as bad). We never got any damage to anything like some people did, but I did notice droppings here and there in the spring. We switched to the peppermint oil and have virtually seen no trace of the little monsters. I must admit that we still put dryer sheets around in addition to the oil, a little overkill is better than chewed up seat cushions!

All of the above PLUS the spring loaded traditional traps PLUS these rotating "no touch" traps PLUS those sonar things that are supposed to emit a tone PLUS I recently got a barn cat. About the only thing I can conclusively does not work are those sonar things: they had mouse droppings on top of them, which I took as a commentary from the mice about their effectiveness. K
