Wheel help needed
Hello all, I picked up a 68 GMC Stepside. As you know I have drums all the way around and just want to bolt on some wheels/tires for now.
I am looking for something like 20's on the front and 22"s on the rear. I don't have the funds to do an Air-ride yet so I will just do a drop kit front and rear. The drop I am sure depends on the wheels. I would like to bolt on wheels without spacers as I like the deep dish look. I like the 5 spoke look also. Anyone do this to their truck? I would love to see a picture if you have. My truck is black and I was thinking about black or Gunmetal wheels with a chrome lip or something like that. Thanks for your advice. I read thought this forum each night till my eyes dry out and then head to bed Thanks Will |

Re: Wheel help needed
I will do a ECE 4/6 drop and go to discs in the front and run spacers if that helps out with my question.

Re: Wheel help needed
I had no plans on swapping fenders but I will look into it. I never even though of that one.
I have a mildly built LS 5.3 and 4l60e I am swapping in. I build my own harnesses and reprogram my own computer to match. Here's a pic of the motor/trans combo going in. |

Re: Wheel help needed
Good looking truck.
Something to consider on suspension is installing air bags and using schrader valves instead of an air management system. This will allow you to not have to swap out suspension whenever you do decide for air ride. Then when funds allow for the air management you simply add it to your suspension. Being you are in Louisville, there should be some good deals on wheels at the swap meet this weekend.

Re: Wheel help needed
Just talked with ELE about a 4/6 drop kit with disc brake conversion on front. They ask me about 5 lug or 6 lug. I like the BOSS 338's but don't see them in a 6 lug.
I would like to run 20x8.5's and 20x10's Should I go with a 5 lug conversion and convert the rear to 5 lug so I can run these wheels or can I just do the 6 lug. I just don't see the wheels in a stock 6 lug 5.5. |

Re: Wheel help needed
Picked up some 22's off CL here in Phoenix for my '69 long bed to shortbed project. Seems most 22s meant for new Silverado's have a 6" back spacing and are 10"s wide. Mine have 305-40-22 tires. Tight fit. Front is still stock height. Will be dropping it around 3-4's. should still clear. Barely rub the shock at full lock.
For the rear i scored a pair of 2" spacers. I think 1.5" would be better. FWIW, my truck has leaf springs. Currently only running the 2 main with the overload. Also lengthened the shackle 2"s. Once the tailgate is mounted and the 25 gallon blazer tank is hung under the back the rear will sit where I want. the 305's are a full 32"s tall. |

Re: Wheel help needed
when you switch to disc brakes go for a larger than stock upgrade - will make wheels look better and stop better.

Re: Wheel help needed
Just a thought ..
IF you're interested in Boss 338 and you do go with the 5 lug conversion, my Dad has a set of chrome 20x8.5 with brand new tires on them. I know they were $1,600 new, you might PM him to see if he'd want to sell them. He has talked about it. His forum 'handle' is NoNeck. Im sure you could get a deal on them and pick them up, no shipping, etc. We're not too far away from you. 10" wheels will be tight on your stepside. Most guys will run a 8.5 all the way around on the steppers. .. it depends on which rear end housing is in your truck. The earlier years were .75" more narrow on either side. I can ask him about the 338's if you're interested. all 4 are 8.5" wide. 275/45/20 tires. They'd look good on your truck with a 4/6 drop. On the bed fenders, your truck has a 1973+ year model bed on it. The 67-72 model years had a rounded wheel arch (like the front) It's not the end of the world but that's why the change was suggested .. I think you can swap 67-72 fenders on it I'm not sure.
