Hey, no Subaru hate here. I've owned 8 of the damn things over the years. Great, cheap little cars that are pretty tough...for what they are.

Since it sounds like you won't even really use the 4WD except for very rarely, my thoughts would run to a system that you KNOW is going to work when you need it (i.e. manual hubs and a manually shifted transfer case), rather than something like failure-prone auto hubs or one of those crappy pushbutton transfer case that may or may not decide to engage.
