Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

So...I have begun a task far larger than I imagined. My cab floors. Later I will post my build as I think I can compete for the worst cab ever award. But right now I have a question concerning where the cab floor meets the back of the cab. Is it spot welded there? Or spot welded to the cross braces? I may end up cutting it all out anyway as the back of the cab is in pretty bad shape as well. Thanks in advance.

it is also spot welded to the floor brace, outside rear corner, at least on mine

Re: Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

do you need to replace the whole inner part? I mean, I guess the reason they don't offer that piece is that it seldom rusts out, even when the outer brace part is rusted thru.

anyway, if you are needing this I'm sure you have already got the outer braces. this piece fits over those on the ends so just fab to fit.

other wise, the outside measurement on mine are 2 1/8" wide x 1 5/8" deep, with 3/4" flanges. OEM gauge appears to be 14 (just guessing, looks to be at least 1/16" thick) your replacement parts won't be this heavy of a gauge.

total width is 44 3/8"

Re: Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

Great thanks. I don't understand what you mean by inner part, but I have some 14gauge I plan on using to fix the brace at the rusted point. It's just weird to me that the rear cab brace isn't sold but every other brace is.... who knows. But thanks again for the measurements.

You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the ends where the cab supports meet that brace do you? Or any one?

Re: Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

or are you talking about the angle ones inside the cab? (like the one you've already removed in your first pic) sorry if so, I misunderstood. someone chopped off the front half of mine, I have no clue why. You may indeed be trying to resurrect the "worst cab ever"

Re: Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

No. That's great. So are the rear cab supports, circled in yellow, just slide into the brace circle in red? Thanks for all your help. The cab is in such bad shape I can't even make out what things used to look like.

Re: Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

ChevyJr, your left yellow circle is the area where these parts join. your left yellow circle is of the passenger side. My first photo shows this same area on the driver's side. the long inner brace fits OVER the outer brace. the spot welds you see are most likely to hold the inner portion of the cab support which keeps the cab bolt from crushing the floor and brace if tightened too much (see your original picture). these spotwelds MAY also help hold the outer brace to the inner one, I don't know cause I didn't go that far. you should be able to see all this on yours cause you have the floor out of the way in that place. the inner brace is also spotwelded to the floor pan, hope you bought more than one spot weld cutter

Edit: it looks like, in your photo, that the "crush" piece is spotted to the rear of the cross brace, which suggests that the spot welds in my picture join the inner and outer braces

Re: Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

I have an issue that worries me really with ny cab. I pulled my bed off and the cab corner was rusted out. (not a surprise) but on the drivers side where it meats the cab corner the brace under it is rusted out and a line on the back wall is rusted out. I will post photoes as soon as I can figure out how.

1963chevyc20. as a registered user (not member) you need to use something like Photobucket (what I use), I think there's an explanation link somewhere up top. when you get it figured out, it would be better if you start a new thread pertaining to your particular issue.

Re: Cab Floor/Back of the Cab

Chevyjr, the area I was referring to as having the "crush" piece (to the right in your photo) IS NOT where the inner and outer braces connect. They connect where the cab-to-frame mounting bolt goes through. That would be the big hole in the brace on the left of your photo. I thought the braces contained a piece to keep the bolt from crushing the brace (the front cab braces do) I am sorry if I totally confused you.

That's pretty typical on these trucks. I repaired the same rust (and a lot more) on the '65 in the build thread in my sig below.

Does anyone have any insight as to where I can locate the longer rear cab support circled in red? Thanks for any help in advance.

Will probably have to source one from a parts cab.

Agreed. I haven't seen a repop of that brace.
