72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

Hi All,
I finally saved up enough to buy a rear mount gas tank. I have been trying to figure out which one would be best and easier to install. I have seen the LMC, Brothers, GMCPaul, Boyd, and Early Classic tank kit.

These are all roughly around the same price so I am not sure which one to get. I will be looking to get the side fill version.

My truck is a 72 GMC with HEI, A/C, internally regulated alt and Q-Jet. My main reason to move the tank is to get room behind the seat so I can install some nice audio equipment.

Any help would be appreciated. Also what else is needed to besides these 'kits'?Would I need to get a sending unit as well?

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

I went with Boyds and got a complete setup including intank pump (EFI) and sending unit, powdercoated. They had great C/S and the fit and finish is flawless. Highly recommended

They have group buys/sales occiasionally in their subforum.

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

Do you all have pics of the powder coated Boyd tank? I had not thought of doing this but curious to see what it looks like. Also were any mods need to fit the tank? I need to check my exhaust to see if they will cause any problems.

I had thought of going with the camaro gas tank buy I don't think I could get that and use a hitch at the same time.

Also considering FuelCellGuy tank as well.

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

I just ordered the 17 Gal from Brothers. They are on sale until Tuesday. I believe they are 35% off right now. Comes with 90 ohm sending unit and straps. They also have a 21 gallon too.

Heads up, my order is on back order at the moment, but they are suppose to have it in the 1st of may.

This is one of the reasons I was thinking of going with the tank from Brothers. I was also going to get a bumper from them cause that is on sale as well so figured I would just order everything all at one.

What differences or difficulties would I run into between using the Brothers tank vs the Boyd tank?

Is this the one you are talking about:

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

I can't speak on behalf if a Boyd tank, I don't have any experience with them.

Close, I got the bed fill model, and it wasn't $379.00. I'll have to look at the sale paper tomorrow when I get to work. ( Left it on my desk) I'll send the part niner too if you want bed fill. I'll be doing a wood bed, so it's not a Big deal for the bed filler.

Yup same one I linked. I am very tempted to get it since it is a good price. Would also free up some room to get that AAW wire harness I have been eyeing.

Looks like I will go with the tank from Brothers.

What other parts are needed? Extend the fuel line and fuel filler hose? Any part numbers would be appreciated.

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

You will need a filler neck of some sort and a gas cap. I went with the filler hose and the SFF4787, but that is a flat mount cap for bed floor and such. If you are going with a side fill, you will have to fab up a filler neck of some sort. Many directions to go with that. Stake pocket, in bed, grafted in fuel door.... You will also need to get a filler panel for your old gas filler neck in the cab, or you can make your own. I ordered mine from brothers and it will need some work to make it right. Nothing a hammer cant fix!

I personally like Vidman's filler neck. You can see it here, Post #559. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...612422&page=23

Thanks a bunch!! Very helpful links. I hadn't seen that one.

I had seen this one since I don't have to cut out anything in the body:

or this one

I like that, it's pretty cool. It's all about the details you want to put into it.

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

I will need to take some pics but I will need to remove a crossmember in the frame of the truck for any of these tanks to fit, correct?

That is correct. Don't worry. It's nothing major or important. Let me know about that wiring harness... Full rewire is on my list.

Do you have a part number for the filler panel by chance?

Give them a call. I think i only payed $8.00 for mine. You may be able to talk them into a free one if you order your tank from them.

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

To go with the camaro gas tank, is this all that would be needed:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Camaro-...item5ae26aa4d7

I am thinking of going this route since it is a bit cheaper and easier to install and no need to do any sort of mods to the body. I just would need to get a bracket for the license plate for the filler neck.

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

If you want it to look right, you will still have to fill the filler neck hole. But I do see what you are saying about the filler neck mod.

Re: 72 GMC LWB Rear Tank Suggestions

I agree I will need to fill the filler neck hole. However to get the tank installed and not have to do any mods for the new tank to work the camaro rear tank install looks to be the cleanest to me. I decided I really won't be pulling anything so it works out.
