truck or camaro

I'm going to put a 700r4in my truck. My question is. Is it better to go with a 700r4 out of a truck or a Camaro? (short tail housing or long) My truck is a 67short bed. Thanks in advance guys!

Re: truck or camaro

Make sure the transmission is made after 1988 I believe. There were improvements made to them. Unless you are getting it rebuilt, then it wouldn't matter. If you're considering a 1 piece drive shaft the longer tailshaft would be beneficial.

Re: truck or camaro

On the 700 there is only one tailshaft. Unless you are counting the 2wd 4wd thing. It is true the closer to the model year 92 trans you can get the better off yor gonna be as far as improvements inside the case and to the case. Jim

Re: truck or camaro

Yes, 700R4 has only 1 length. You are better off with a truck/van tailhousing for mounting. Late '87 up is the one you want, it will have the improved pump and better guts. Corvette and Police car cores are also slightly better, but not enough to chase one down.

Try & find one with the 'rainbow' running up thru the top coolant line. See picture.

Re: truck or camaro

I'm going to look at 1 out of a 89 Camaro tomorrow. They only want a 100 bucks for it and for that price my friend is a mechanic that specializes in trans so I can afford a total rebuild before installed at the price.

Re: truck or camaro

My case was from an "86 Camaro", but it was rebuilt with the upgraded stuff. It's probably 12 years old now (the rebuild) with 35-40K miles on it. Fun set up with a 350 and 3.73 rear end. Just get the set up right and it will last a long time. Incorrect set up is what kills a lot of these transmissions in classics.

Is your truck a shortbed and if so what did you do for a driveshaft?

Re: truck or camaro

Well I went and looked at the tranny this evening and brought it home, it has the rainbow that luvbowties was talking about, not sure what the rainbow means. The oil doesn't look or smell like it's burnt but it looks good and used. The kid didn't know how many miles were on the tranny but that it came out of a 89 Camaro.

Re: truck or camaro

I am getting a 700r4/4L60 out of a 92 s-10 blazer ( 4.3 v6 2 wheel drive) a guy is parting out for $150. going to put it in a 68 lwb behind the 250cid.
I am getting converter, transmission, driveshaft, and all the tv cable brackets.

I hope it is a easy swap.

From the title, I thought you were going to ask us to choose between the two vehicles. I choose both:

Re: truck or camaro

As long as its not the 4L60 because they have electronics and the way I understand you'll have to use the computer to get the tranny to shift right. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: truck or camaro

Not sure if it is the 4L60E... 92 was the change over year from what I understand.
Guess I will find out when I go get it..LOL
I think they make a aftermarket stand alone connection switch to activate the Electric controlled. guess i need to go read over on the drivetrain thread..

The rainbow indicates 2 things. First, it id's it as definitely newer than the mid-87-year-and-older that you DO NOT want. Second, I've read that the r'bow is actually an additional oil passage to help with internal cooling for the higher-performance versions. I've just recently had one rebuilt 'with all the goodies' by a supposedly-knowledgeable tranny specialist; he demanded such a core even tho' he was updating the internals--mods that quite a few tranny guys claim would eliminate the need for ANY CERTAIN core, even '87-and-older. My guy feels the r'bow is something you cannot eliminate the need for, regardless of mods.

Good luck on it having that case; and luck on it working well, as is. DON'T FORGET TO ADJUST THROTTLE VALVE CABLE CORRECTLY BEFORE DRIVING--IT IS NOT A KICKDOWN CABLE, BUT RATHER A "HEART REGULATOR" THAT ELIMINATES "HEART ATTACKS" ON THESE TRANNIES. IF RUNNING A CARB OTHER THAN A QUADRAJET, IT IS A MUST TO USE A CARB-LINKAGE-ADJUSTER[GEOMETRY-CONVERTOR] FOR THAT CABLE TO HAVE CORRECT GEOMETRY FOR OPERATING CORRECTLY.

Short Bed with a 1 piece drive shaft. I had to have it shortened. I have no idea how much... this was back in 2001 ish.

Research http://bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml and check out the TV made EZ TV cable kits and electronic lock-up kits with a brake switch (unlocks converter when you slam on the brakes.) I've been using their kits since 2006. Trans shifts great.

Absolutely sound advice. DO NOT even start it one time without adjusting the TV cable correctly first.
