Edelbrock 1406 elec. choke 600 cfm or Edelbrock 9635 elec. choke 625 cfm
Work well and easy to work on. I've had Holleys, seem to alway be adjusting float level on them. In my experience, Edelbrocks seem to be more "set it and forget it" . On a sbc with basic stock internals nothing bigger than 600 or 625 cfm. Also would recommend an Edelbrock Performer or Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. Maybe even an Edelbrock Airgap intake if want to hammer on it a bit. All good street intakes. My .02

I don't think you can do better than a Quadrajet. I would get one from a quality remanufacturer, and I'd probably look for a later-70s model that has an electric choke.
The Quadrajet is just a great all-around carb. You can run it straight out of the box for years with no problems, and the combination of economy (small primaries) and available power (huge secondaries) gives you the choice of how you want to drive it. I've owned a number of Holley, Edelbrock, and Weber carburetors, and I still go back to the Quadrajet. |

A properly tuned Q Jet is your best bet on drivability and fuel mileage. Problem is finding a person who knows how to knows how to tune one!

Q-jet is very nice for mileage and performance. If you can find a nice core or somebody who is good with them, they are hard to beat.
Holley is good for easy to work on. If you go that way a 600 vac is a good one. You don't need a 750. I have had no luck with the Edelbrocks. There is way too many adjustments. They must be better than they used to be based on this post. I nice stock truck is a good candidate for fuel-injection. TBI or TPI would go on easy.

On my 67 cadillac, 429 ci, i used a q-jet that was reworked by mountainman fuel systems out of arkansas, the q-jet that he built me was for a 350 ci camaro, and hed set it up for about 900 cfm( thats about all they can do i think) But it was reliable as all heck and after initial setup, i never messed with it once. Id say rebuild a q-jet or get someone who is great at it to do it, and youll be happy, though the previous member are right on if you cant get a q-jet done right.

I went with a Street Demon 625 and I'm very happy. Had on my 327 and now on a 350. Basically an Edelbrock, but has a lot of the Eddy issues designed out. I had no luck with the Eddy I had before, but this thing just works.

I just replaced my 1406 with a holley 750 DP. I have not ran the truck for a couple of years and I had to clean the card a second time because of a persistent internal vacuum issue. Still couldn't get it to idle without the choke being 1/5 way open so I followed my uncle's advise and snatched a used Holley off CL. All it needed was some light cleaning and the truck started right up on the very first crank. I will never purchase an edelbrock again, they work great when new but I had bad luck after 1st and 2nd rebuilt. If you good the 1406, a lot of people has problems with them. The street demons are nice too.

I think the thing to remember most is that sometimes JUST a carb swap will cause you problems. There are CFM's and fuel pressures to consider. Any of those three carbs can be good if you are willing to put in the time to learn it's quirks.

One thing to always spend the money on if you are on a budget with a carb, do not cheap out on a regulator and all your fittings, at the end of the day you dont weant to spring a leak or break a fitting off in something and make it complete trash, carb options aside, a well though out fuel delivery system will pay its dividends.

I have a reman edelbrock on my stock 350 its a good carb.It has an electric choke runs great in cold weather.I had to get to get their fuel pump to take away a hot start problem.I have had a holley carb to that had no problems.

IMO, nothing works better on a stock or slightly modified GM engine than a Q-jet. There's a reason they were used as original equipment on almost every vehicle with the exception of a few Holleys. Q-jets offer superior driveability and have the ability to pour on the fuel under WOT situations. John Lingenfelter whipped many a tail in drag racing using almost nothing but race prepped Q-jets back in the day. I've purchased two from Summit for less than $300 and both were bolt on, adjust fast and curb idle speed, and tweak idle mixture oh so slightly!

Q-Jet www.cliffshighperformance.com can sell everything you need, get his book also.
He's very busy, if you want him to build your carb, he is approx, one year behind. Build it yourself!!! He will need carb number and specifics about your vehicle. Send him and email and be patient, He doesn't have time for "maybe" phone calls. It's worth the wait!!! |
