TH350 OOzing

There's some seepage at the shifter rod....where it goes into the body of the trans.

I went to Napa today and they ordered the "part"...$1.69.

I can't find a schematic anywhere....I'm hoping that it goes in from the outside and that it's something I can do......
with my limited brains and limited patience.

For a long time, I was "chasing" a brake fluid leak. Right now, there are only two fluids in the truck...oops...three including the differential.
So, as I chased an elusive brake fluid, the trans fluid was fooling me. 65 and I STILL can't tell one from another. Even when brake fluid is so caustic.
What the $#&^%@?

Anyway, any tips on the trans shifter rod seal removal/replacement?

If I remember correctly on a th350, drop the pan, drive the pin out that holds the shift rod to the detent plate and slide the shaft out twoards the outside. Remove the old seal and drive the new one in with a appropriate sized socket. I also think there is a o-ring on the shaft, replace it also. All in all a easy job, good luck.

Another note, I have changed them w/o removing the shaft from the trans by just using a deep socket but getting the old seal out is more trouble than its worth and you really should change the o-ring anyway.

There is a speciality tool for replacing the selector shaft seal. Just can't think of it at the moment. Mine grew legs years ago. Here take a look at post #4 http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/th35...ll-211281.html

Don't drop the pan there is a seal removal tool you can get from napa part number 776-9250. Simple job.

for sure you dont have to drop the pan there is a special seal tool i have removed them with a pick tool before though
that shifter seal is the same for many different trans good luck

I use two little screws to pull them. Take an awl or tiny pin punch and poke two holes in the old seal opposite of each other. Make sure you poke the seal only and not get too close and gouge the shaft. Then screw two little screws into the holes you made and pull upwards with dikes.

Here is a TH350 I did awhile back on my stepside.



Tap the new seal in with a deep socket, a piece of conduit, or about anything that allows you to tap it in place easily.
