My grandfather told me when hiring a man to do a job, look for a lazy man. He will know or find the fastest , cheapest way do get something done without making a mess you will make him clean up thus saving himself time and you aggravation.

So, when you say ,"HUH" what you are really saying is "DUH"!
Alrighty then, thanks Fitz. Simple solution usually the best is kinda obvious - I was referring to the 'lone voice of reason in a storm of BS' part of it. I appreciate everyone's suggestions and didn't think any were BS. Anyhoo... Have gotten great advice from Kevin many times, especially on the 60-66 forum - I always appreciate folks' constructive input.

A little update on this issue. Issue solved! Brian Mac, THANK you. Your re-thread worked perfectly. Gauge reads as it should at op temp with a re-threaded TU5 and stock wiring. Whew.. The heat stove required trimming (red arrows) in order to clear the much larger sender hex (15/16"). Also was concerned that the much deeper TU5 would bottom out before seating because of the difference from the present sender (see earlier side-by-side) but it turned out to not be an issue at all. No leaks at all.
Thanks again Brian, this is, by far, the simplest solution to the newer engine/factory gauge dilemma. Here are some pics - the re-threaded TU5, a close-up of the trimming, and the op temp gauge making me smile. Last one is the next step... Has nothing to do with the temp sender!
