86-91 Grille Swap questions

Got a couple questions about this swap. Guess id better start with I have an 86 Crew Cab dually. I got a 90 model suburban front clip. Radiator support forward. The hardware is a pretty simple swap but I have wiring questions. Ive read a few threads where they just swapped pins at the bulhead connector to fit and wired the dark blues together but that to me still has the issue with all the power going thru the switch to the relays. I already have the relay conversion harness on mine. Has anyone converted the relay harness over to fit the new style bulb or is there something better to do. I only got part of the harness since I didnt pull it myself but i know where another harness is I can grab if I need to. Suggestions please.

Re: 86-91 Grille Swap questions

Is your '86 originally a dual lamp front or a single lamp front? Depending on what you have the answer varies.

Its a dual lamp with the original harness intact and the relay harness added.

Re: 86-91 Grille Swap questions

For Future FYI ers. this place has the correct color coded conectors for the 4701 and 4703 headlights. I ordered 2 of each and Im just going to retrofit my relay harness with them. Should be much simpler than building a whole new harness although not as fun.

Re: 86-91 Grille Swap questions

Sorry for the delay...that is EXACTLY what I was going to suggest for you, swapping the plugs on your existing relay harness. If you had the single lamps it would've been more of a hassle, but with your existing dual lamps and harness it's a simple plug swap. Thanks for those links.

Thats what I figured but what was baffling me was why no one makes a relay harness for these Setups. I had considered that maybe by these years they had already converted to relays but couldnt find any info on that either. Needless to say other than converting the original harness to the old plug for the firewall there is not alot of info on this swap. Im still considering grabbing another harness off a donor truck and making me a relay harness out of it so all the marker lights and turn signal plugs are in the correct locations and I like playing with that Kind of stuff. Who knows maybe there is a market for a conversion harness thats Plug and Pray. LOL

lmc carries the relay harness for those frontends, but it only works with the upgraded headlights they sell that take the little bulbs in the back.
