Re: LS1 or 327?!!!!
I just got my truck maybe a week ago and I'm head over heels for it. It's got a 350 700r4 combo. Gas tank still in the cab. The lack of refinement and the smell of an old truck/car reminded me of being a kid, riding with my dad in one of his old muscle cars. I dig it so much that I wanted to drive it everyday. After burning up $50 in just a few days, I can see an LS motor swap. I will miss that feeling I get from tapping the gas pedal before turning the key in the morning, and the presence of an actual linkage between my foot and the throttle, but I want my cake and eat it too. Plus the LS motors can make big power while retaining reasonable mileage and manners. I'm dreaming of an LQ4 4L80E with a mild turbo setup.

Re: LS1 or 327?!!!!
If your worried about the old school feel then build an old school ls. Mines a 5.3 carburated with a hot cam and ported heads. The coils are mounted in the dash and it runs a 50's cad air cleaner with scripted valve covers.

Re: LS1 or 327?!!!!
My last two project vehicles have been LSX based drive-trains. An LS2 T-56 combo and now a 5.3 Vortec 4L65E. No disrespect but the old motors while nostalgic are truly a step down in my opinion, and I've build hundreds of SBC and BBC in the past. Heres the Before and After engine pictures in my 68 SWB GMC
My Two Cents

Re: LS1 or 327?!!!!
Ls1 for me. Wish I would have done it years ago.
It does get some hate from the purists at shows, but those comments are far shadowed by the positive ones. Different strokes for different folks - these things would be boring if they were all built the same. For me, the power, mileage, and reliability are a no brainer. Made me fall in love with the truck again. Fires instantly, never overheats, idles smooth, and plenty of ponies on demand which MUCH improved throttle response.

Re: LS1 or 327?!!!!
I love my LS. I have a 6.0 and 6 speed. Best of both worlds.

Re: LS1 or 327?!!!!
Or................how about modernizing that 327 small block with Fuel Injection and a 700r4? I finished this about 3 months ago and love it. F.I.R.S.T. TPI.

Re: LS1 or 327?!!!!
I've looked at both motors. The 327 or the 5.7 LS motors has toque.the 327 LS motor has some cus they use the same large jernal crank
Here in Calif are gas is so high we have to start thinking of going fuel injected. But a lot of guys don't understand is if you change your truck with a none smog motor you might have to smog it ever 2 years even if its a classic.Best off run all the Smog componates like the Cats O2 censers it just makes it run that much better and cleaner. I have 3 trucks i like to do it to but money is a little short. Hope one day i can build one take out the heater core and put the computer where the heater core is and clean up all that mess where the wires go |
