Swapped out gas tank

I had a leak in my gas tank that was smelling up everything, not to mention wasting about $60 a week in fuel.

I can't afford the kits to move the tank to the rear at the moment, so I just got a spectre tank and replaced it behind the seat in about 75 minutes.

What I noticed though is that my old tank had a port in the top passenger side that connected to a hose that takes a long trip around the tank and goes through the floor next to the fuel line. The new tank does not have this port. For the moment, I plugged up the line by clamping a bolt into the hose and everything seems to work so far.

I was told it's likely an evap port and just to make sure I've got a vented gas cap? Does that sound accurate?

I've always trusted people here that I don't even know more than my local mechanic, ha.

The '72 models were the only ones in this series that used the vent line to the EVAP can.
The gas fill caps were also different ('72 had a check valve in the vent). If you plugged off the EVAP vent line, use the older style cap.

Mine is a '71 and has the EVAP line. But the suggestion should still work. I'll get an older style cap with a vent. Thanks!

My 71 truck has a vapor canister under the hood. I'm think that if the truck (no matter what year) has a factory equipped vapor canister, it also has an evap vent hose coming from the tank.

The EEC can appeared on all '72 models. The can may be OEM on '71 "California" models as emission control specs were more stringent there. I have never seen one on earlier models.

I have two 71's and both have the EEC gas tank. One is originally from Alabama and the other is from Texas.

My truck was bought new in North Carolina BUT is California certified to operate in that state according to my emissions label. I have the original Protect-O-Plate with the N.C. dealers name listed as well as the original owners name and address. Here are pictures of the emissions label and the original paperwork. It seems like some the 1971 trucks were California emissions legal but sold new in other states as well. Anyone else with a 1971 *California emissions applicable* truck that wasn't sold in California? Hmm, I guess you'd have to have the original papers to be sure.

Thanks, this helps with what cap to order.

I'd read something about the '71 not having an EEC tank, but instead of looking like I should have, just ordered one without.

I'm glad it seems that I can make it work.
