4x4 conversion
Afternoon Gents, I own a 70 GMC 1500 2WD, and i would really like to put an axle under the front and turn it into a 4x4, I know there's more to it then just throwing an axle under there, but does anyone know of a conversion kit? how about a good build thread showing how it was done?

I've seen 73-87 front 4x4 front suspension, tranny and transfer case grafted onto a 2wd coil spring 67-72. It made a nice little 4x4 for non extreme off roading. It seemed a little strange at first but it all worked.

Might be easier to just use a 73-87 4x4 frame and just swap body over. You will have all components and disc brakes.

This one shows the front brackets, and the e-brake dimple that needs to be flattened.

My Longhorn started life as a 2WD but conversion was done before I got it. The hardest part I think is getting the big hole in the right location for the rear spring shackle. I did cut out and rework this area during my restoration because the holes were cut-out with a torch, a little out of location, and they were around the E-Brake dimples. This made bolting the cast iron shackle bracket difficult because it needs all three (3) bolts on a flat surface.

I'm really starting to consider cannibalizing my 86 suburban for the conversion.
it's got most of the stuff I want/need for the conversion already (3/4 ton axles!) this could get very interesting...

well guys, looks like I will be doing the swap with a 3/4 ton instead of a 1/2 ton. I'm going to be combining my two trucks to make one good 2wd 3/4 ton and then swap a front axle under it and make it 4wd later.
