Canadian transport sticker questions
I just noticed what was on this sticker yesterday as I'd never looked closely before. A friend of mine told me her first car had the same thing and she understood that the body was built in Canada and shipped to the US. She didn't know if it was the entire vehicle or just the body.
Do any of you history buffs know the true story behind this? Thanks! |

Since 1965 an agreement between Canada and USA called the Auto-Pact came into being and it meant assembled cars and trucks could be shipped between the 2 Countries and there would be tariffs , fees or duties involved. I believe the door jamb sticker you posted on this thread is one of the early stickers that was used by the factories to show that the truck was built to specs for Canada or the USA. As an example of the Auto Pact and free trade between Canada and the USA the 1,000,000 + Ford Crown Victoria cop cars that have been running around the two countries for the past 20 years or so were all built at the St.Thomas, Ontario , Canada Ford plant. In 1988 ( I think it was 88 ) the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was launched and it also included Mexico. With that in effect vehicles, and everything else manufactured in Canada, Mexico or the USA could go from country to country without tariffs.
One last thing since 1981 when 17 digit serial numbers became the norm if a serial number starts with a 1, the vehicle was built in the USA. If the serial number starts with a 2 ( check any Crown Vic cop car you see ) it was built in Canada. If it starts with a 3 ( a lot of 90's Dodge trucks are built in Mexico) it was built in Mexico.

Back several years ago when the wreck rebuild thing was a little different than it is now I could pick and choose what I wanted to build down to miles limits I tried not to go over 10k for current model years or 30 k in total. Color was a biggie for me Red, White,or Black I would do others but those first three were my mainstay. I would also give a pass sometimes when looking at the tag, I always wanted a 2G truck meaning it was built by our friends in the Great White North. With the exception of like the model year 95 and 97's the 2G trucks were better built seemingly all around I don't know if their contract was different if they were happier in general or what it just seemed like the Canadian trucks lasted better for my customers over the entire range of say 40 or 50 trucks of mine put out you could trace back and keep check on.
All of this my be total bull puckey and I would like to think that we can build a truck as good as anyone else and those figures no longer apply. Now the Avalanche is thrown in there[or was until 13] and they were all built in Mexico and were great in my opinion. Notice I said can instead of did I'm sure we can build anything as good or better than anyone if we will we may have gotten to a place unhappy or who knows but I did a ton of those and that is what I saw not saying the 1G trucks were junk by any means I loved them too.
