np205 side mount
I picked up a 205 side mount that goes to the frame. I know a lot of people say this is not needed. However, the wreck I got into it snapped my transmission and I feel this would not have happened if I had this bracket.
So I got a used one, said it was pulled from a 72. My truck is a 72, but the t-case is mfg in late 73, so likely a "74" model. I have looked at several pictures as to how its to be installed. But mine is not even coming close to that. To make it set flush against the t-case, it is on the bottom side of the frame. So, are there different brackets thru the years that I could possibly get a different one? I need considerable more... vertical distance.

Re: np205 side mount
There is a reason GM quit using that bracket. Odds go up significantly that you will have issues with the adapter housing between the transmission and transfer case if you use the side mount bracket. After the 72 model year I am not even sure if they used the side mount at all. The treaded holes in the side of the case remained the same for the entire life of the gm 205. In later years it was used with a support rod that tied the case to the bellhousing. If you are concerned with the weight of the case that would be a better option. The side mount will put a lot of rotational bind on the adapter and case of the trans. Which will likely lead to cracking issues somewhere. An accident is a rarity and even if it was the cause, I dont think I would use the frame bracket as insurance against such an ulikey occurance vs the repeated issues that were caused by simply driving with the side mount in place. I have tossed every one of those in the trash on every truck I have had and never had a single issue.
I dont know if there are different brackets available but given the drivetrain swap, it may have moved everything around enough that it wont fit anymore |

Re: np205 side mount
There was a BIG discussion on this in times past, some say yes some say no My truck doesn't have it and I'm not going to worry about it....

Re: np205 side mount
Ive read the discussions. I'm just wondering if their was different brackets.
As Ryan above mentioned, hes not sure the 73+ came with them. If that is true, then their would be no variations of the bracket. |

Re: np205 side mount
I parted out a 1973 long bed half ton. It came equipped with a 4 speed and 205 which had the side mounted bracket. I still have it somewhere if anyone wants some pics but I do believe it is the same as the earlier ones.

Re: np205 side mount
Those brackets are garbage and greatly contribute to breaking the adapter between trans and transfercase.

Re: np205 side mount
Thanks. Attached is a picture of the short side of the bracket, bracket upside down. Mine is angled. This is the furthest from the ground hole. This dimension please.
