Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Hey I have a weird problem going on with my 03 Sierra 1500HD. I got in it yesterday morning, and it said my left rear door was ajar. I looked, and it was shut fine. So I opened it, and closed it. Still said it was open. So I messed with the lock/unlock button and it locked then unlocked. I tried it again, and this time it worked, and the message went away. Drove it the rest of the day with no problems. Last night went to lock it with the remote for the night, and it did the same thing. I looked in the door latch this morning to see if something was stuck in it or something, and couldn't see anything out of the normal. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be, or how to fix it? When I get home tonight I'm going to try and disconnect the battery to see if it will reset whatever is messing up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Well I have an update to the situation. I unhooked the battery for a couple of hours, and that didn't help. So I started messing with the wire loom that goes from the cab to the door. I just wiggled it around, and such. I also gave the door a good whack around the side of the door latch. After that it worked. So don't really know what fixed it, but it's fixed.

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Well I tried spraying the latches, hinges, etc... Still having the problem. I took the door panel off, and put di-electric grease on the plugs both on the door latch, and also on the plug where it comes from the body to the door. Still isn't showing the door being closed.
I was looking at the other thread about the problem with the rear door locks. I may try the new relays next. Only thing is that the door is locking. It just isn't sending the signal to the computer or wherever it goes telling it that it is. |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Is the dome light staying on too? If so, it sounds like a problem with the switch in the lock. GM put the pin switch and lock actuator all together in the door lock assembly. I think the actuator is available seperately, but the pin switch (used to operate the dome light and "door ajar" feature) is not, as I recall.

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Yeah the dome light is staying on also. However, I just use the dome override button to turn it off. That sounds like what my problem is. Funny how they change things to supposedly make them easier, but it causes a bigger hassle to repair. I'll look into replacing the latch assembly, and see if that solves the problem.
Thanks man. |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
UPDATE:
Well I got the new door latch assembly from GM Parts Direct, and got it installed last night. Still have the same problem . Does the signal by chance pass through the driver's door first? When I try and lock the doors from the inside with the button. They all lock, and then the driver's door will unlock. I didn't have the frame of mind to take the drivers door panel off and look at it. Maybe this weekend. |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
The drivers door will not lock at all, or do you have to press the switch twice? If it will lock after you press it twice, that is built into it so you don't lock your keys in the vehicle (if using the inside switch). What does it do when using the keyless entry fob?

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
ok when you are sitting in the truck with it running and hit the inside door lock button all the doors lock, and then the driver's door will unlock. When you put it in gear it doesn't lock the doors, and pops up on the DIC that the left rear door is ajar. I'm assuming it's doing this because the rear door is not registering as closed. When you try and use the key fob outside the truck. Push it once and it won't lock it just dings three times like a door isn't shut. Push it the second time, and it will lock. So basically the rear door is closed, but something is telling the truck that it isn't. I use the dome light override switch to turn the dome light off because it won't go off.
So I am just thinking that maybe the signal is going through somewhere else before it gets to the rear door. Everything was working fine, and then one day bam having this problem. |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Well I have a small update. Unfortunately it's not a solution update. I did a google search on the issue I was having, and found out that I'm not alone in my problem. Unfortunately I didn't find anyone with a final solution. One instance that I found the guy was told by the dealership that it was the Body Control Module. In another they were told it may be the security module. Both of which are not cheap. So my battle continues to find out what's going on.
I did have a glimpse of hope yesterday. Out of the blue it worked normally for about ten minutes, and then went back to it's evil ways. |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Well knock on wood the doors are working normal, and have been for 4 days straight! I don't know if my road trip to Washington, and back pulling a trailer bounced it around enough for it to fix itself or what. I'm not complaining at all, just glad that it is working like it is supposed to.

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
I'm having the same issue, but it's affecting my right rear door instead and has been going on for nearly two years. I was also told that it might be the Body Control Module, but since the actual impact of the problem is minor and the cost was high to replace it, I haven't bothered. But get this, I live in North Dakota, and the problem goes away completely all winter, only to re-appear in the spring. I can only assume that it's related to temperature/humidity, and once the temp is down in the teens and below zero, everything returns to normal, and the "door is ajar" message only appears when I actually leave the door open. Once the temp is back up above freezing, I'm back to ding-ding-ding "door is ajar" again. Any chance that sparks an idea or two on possible causes?

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
I've kind of came to the same conclusion that you have. Just ignore it. It drives me nuts everytime I look down at the display, but not enough yet to try and trace all the wires to the Body Control Module. I have been told that I could possibly take it into the dealership and they could re-program/flash the BCM and it may solve the problem. I have also been told that I could unplug the BCM, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in. However the guy that told me this couldn't tell me where the BCM is located at in my truck. So I have just ignored it, and hope it goes away someday.
As for the tempurature thing. The cold doesn't affect it one way or the other for me, so far. |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
My 2003 Sierra SLT Crewcab HD 3/4 ton 4x4 had the same problem after and accident. Body Shop gave it back to me and could not fix it. It was hooked up to computer and they removed the error code but it came back.
I will tell you how to reprogram your door locks. Takes seconds I have a fix if you would like to mesage me Mark |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
PM sent. I've just about narrowed it down to the gauge cluster. My oil pressure gauge is messing up now. So now this will be my third cluster that has messed up. Just decided to forget the cluster issue unless my speedo messes up again. Really frustrating.

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
hey john check out www.dormanproducts.com they sell a re-manufactured cluster with a life time warranty, for like 200 dollars but the core charge is like 330 which you get back when you return the others i order these all the time at work seem to work better then the dealer clusters

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
A new gauge cluster is not going to fix the problems.. !
Your oil gauge is probally sending unit or wire problem. Door locks and radio not playing and dome light not going out I can help you fix in minutes............mark |

Re: Weird Door Sensor Problem.
Thanks for the link David. Yeah they started providing those after my last repair. Wish it would have been there for the first one. Oh well. I'm actually looking at another truck soon so I'll probably just deal with it, and go on.
