Can a 46 guy ask a body question to a 47 and up guy?

Hey guys! I have a 46 build thread going on over on the "pre" side but it's kind of slow over there so I was hoping I could get some answers to my problem over here.
One of my inner rear cab wall supports is loose and I am not sure how to go about re-attaching it. The upper portion is still in place. By looks of the other 2 supports, it seems as if the bottom should just be held in place by some kind of seam sealer? Is this correct? Perhaps I should try and weld it to the sheet metal? That doesn't seem right does it?

Here's a pic of the other 2 the one closest to the drivers door has some kind of glue or tar behind it and is locked in place at the top by the cross support. At the bottom it looks as if it is held in place by seam sealer. The center one has nothing behind it.

What has me confused is none of these supports seem long enough at the bottom to even be embedded in the seam sealer. It looks as if they are sitting on top of the sealer. WTF? So I guess my question is how would you go about fastening the one support?

Most say the two areas should be combined.

If it reaches the floor or the little vertical lip I would just tack weld it there. If it is too short I would tack a piece onto the bracket long enough to get it to the lip or floor. Only reason I could think for it to be in sealant would be to allow for body flex. Looks like it is just there to keep the back from oil canning or vibrating? Was there any sealant or webbing between it and the body? My truck has similar between the hood braces and metal skin.

You don't put a "seam sealer" you want to put an "anti Flutter foam". The seam sealer will attach it's self to both the support and the skin and when either part moves it can put a little "dent" or ghost dent on the back panel.

That is what has me confused. the drivers side has a dump truck load of black goo behind it. The one in the center and the one that is loose are clean and don't look as if they ever had any kind of glue attaching them.

Hmm that stuff looks interesting. one question though... Seeing as how the back of my cab has some major dents and oil canning and is in need of shrinking. would I shrink the rear panel first and then reattach the support first. Or, get every thing buttoned back up and then do the shrinking?

The metal should be repaired before you put the braces in.

I'd agree with Martinsr 100% on that. Fix the sheet metal and than attach the strips.

I think that is what i'll do however the other braces are already firmly attached. In fact the drivers side support is embedded in some kind of tar looking stuff. i guess i'll just have to do the best i can.

i'm ok with you posting over here, as slow as the pre47 forum is, i think they should be combined

tar looking stuff may have been old black rubber foam similar to what chevy used on tf trucks
my hood brace had rubber foam in it to keep the hood from oil canning that had turned to sticky goo
i replaced it with self adhesive rubber foam
