Re: nv 3500 in a 60-66?
I don't have any personal experience with the NV3500, but it is a close(r) ratio trans without the super low 1st/reverse gears that the NV4500/SM420/SM465 has.
I'm not going to say you can't blow it up if you tried, but a 292 is weaker than what it comes behind to begin with. They are rated for 300ftlbs. You can also pick up an actual NV4500 for about $400-500 from what I've seen. |

Re: nv 3500 in a 60-66?
I believe there are a couple '60-'66 members that have bought my hydraulic clutch conversion that are running a NV3500, but I don't think they are driving them yet. There are also a couple '67-'72 members that have bought my hydraulic clutch conversion that are running NV3500's.
My former DD, a '90 C1500 had the 4.3 and NV3500. I will be installing that trans in my current DD, a '68 C10, behind a 305. A NV3500 will be just fine behind a 292. The NV3500 just doesn't have the low 1st gear like the SM420 or SM465. The NV4500's all came from the factory with a hydraulic clutch, which you will have to use unless you buy the bellhousing from Advance Adapters. The NV4500 will not bolt up to a typical 3 speed/4speed GM bellhousing.

Re: nv 3500 in a 60-66?
Not to hack the thread, but the same question has been on my mind...would the NV3500 bolt on to a 292's bell housing or do I need an adapter plate?

Re: nv 3500 in a 60-66?
It will bolt right up. The 230/250, 292 I6's all have the same bellhousing shape and bolt pattern as all small blocks and big blocks

Re: nv 3500 in a 60-66?
Thanks, Yeah I knew they had the same bell housing pattern as the BB and SB, but didn't know the tranny was the same.

Re: nv 3500 in a 60-66?
I've seen a couple GM versions recently for $400-500; from what I've read, that seems to be about what they go for.
