paint did have something wrong with it

so for a week now i thought i did something wrong with my prep for my paint guys on here said so too but a week later my paint still isnt hard so i can sand it down to re paint started looking at the paint supplies happen to notice the shop gave me the wrong kind of catylist my paint is now pretty much the texture of wax i can run my finger nail down it and it rolls right up really suck the big one... now i have to sand the whole truck down and start over bad thing is the paint mix was only used on the 3rd coat if i would have left it at 2 coats it would have looked great now looks like poop

An unpleasant experience, to be sure.

Hypothetical: Any chance you could spray reducer or catalyst over the paint and let it "set in?" If the paint is still soft, maybe it would "absorb" and harden?

Just thinking out loud. I'd hate to have to "scrape" all that off.

What a friggin bummer. I do a fair amount of paint work and nothing worse than having to do it over. It is hard to swallow. Been there and had to do it.

That blows, sorry to see that. I take you can't sand it out easily because it gums up the paper? Perhaps using a compatible solvent while sanding will keep the paper clear, just a random idea. Use proper ventilation and read the labels, etc.

ya i have been trying to figure out a easy way to do this i guess the catylist was for flexible paint like rock guard and for plastic bumpers or what ever was mixed with the cans of catylist didnt notice till the paint started to mess up then happen to see the can and it was the wrong kind soo pissed now cause it is my fault i didnt look at the can worsed is when i was mixing i thought it poured out of the can kinda funny

Sorry! That sucks! I had a similar experience building a boat, was putting the last layer of glass down, got it all soaked and perfect, went a drank a few beers then went back to check on it and the entire boat was still wet! I tried spraying hardener over the surface to see if it would harden up but it never did. I ended up pulling the last layer of glass off and throwing it away. It was a mess, had to rub the entire surface with acetone to get all the wet epoxy off. Turned out the hardener I used was no good. Good luck! You'll get it, gonna be a job but it will be worth it when you get done.

I think Airspeed is right about using Acetone, but it stinks so for sure use exhaust ventilation and have NO HYPOCONDRIACS within 200'. They will claim you made them sick! I painted my 67 Chevelle and the paint stayed soft, but I didn't know why. I wet sanded that thing for days before I got back to primer. Sucks, but you are not alone!

Been there and done that, there is no easy way to get back to right. Once on a bumper cover I sprayed lacquer thinner on it with the gun and wiped it down to remove some paint layers, doing smaller spots at a time. Jim

maybe try to scrape as much as you can with a plastic scraper(cheap plastic putty knife) and try to get the rest with paper towels soaked in lacquer thinner...cause that crap will be impossible to sand till you get down to the good layer....had a batch of dupont sealer fail to crosslink and the clearcoat lifted it...had to have my ralley's media blasted and start over....

thanks guys i am going to try a couple things today and see what happens thankfully i sprayed it on pretty thin i hope a quick sand will work i have some 300 grit disks i will try that and hope that i can just peel the top layer off

there is a paint god my nitemare is over i took some paint thinner put it in a squirt bottle and wipe the messed up paint right off only took me and my son 2 hrs to do best part it only washed off the bad paint now i guess a wash with soap and water and maybe a rub with scotch brite and wax and grease remover then a trip to the paint shop to b!tch about the wrong cataylist then try to paint it again

i soo thought it was i did get really lucky i guess that fact it was a week between 2nd and 3rd coat saved me the 2nd coat hardened so the 3rd crap coat was able to wipe right off
