rear sway bar or not?
I have a 3.5 drop in front and 5.5 in rear. I 'm going with a stock front sway bar. Do you recommend a rear bar or not. I have a rear cpp sway bar but I'm not sure I like it enough to drill the holes in the stock trailer arms plus the holes look really close the center of the trailer arms . So yes on rear sway bar or no and the reason? thanks

Re: rear sway bar or not?
I'm curious as well. I noticed a really big difference in handling when I added the front sway bar.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
My truck is a 4/6 drop with the Early Classic front sway bar. Handling was good but really improved when I added the CPP rear sway bar. The local SCCA snobs retch when I show up at one of their autocross events but I always place at the top of my class. There isn't anyone in it, but my times are also near the top. It just chaps the backside of one Porsche owner that a 46 year old pickemup truck bests his times. He's tried to have the truck tossed out several times but can't and I have a sign in the rear window to remind him that I have never failed to beat him. It's Calvin peeing on a 911 with an appropriate caption!

Re: rear sway bar or not?
I install the same one on my truck. I wasn't real crazy about where the holes needed to be drill, but I didn't want to spend the extra money for a different unit. I'm very satisfied with the ride, but I haven't really driven it much to be able to say how big of difference it made.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
Personal preference, driving style, intended use, and tire play as big a role as just about anything you've mentioned.
Some vehicles corner better without a rear bar some don't. The more lateral traction available the more likely you will want a rear sway bar.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
Wouldn't the chances of the back end kicking out be greater with a rear bar?
You may need to know the balance and match both bars to get it handling right but I'm not certain. |

Re: rear sway bar or not?
Correct. Front and rear sway bars add significantly to the drivability under most conditions. Under or over steer should be expected during aggressive or spirited driving depending on the combinations of bars.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
A rear sway bar will be a great idea if you haul things in the back, like a pickup should be used for, especially with a camper. I have noticed when I haul wood off of the mountain that the back end sways a bit on the switchbacks. Just an added two-cents worth.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
A rear sway bar will be a very nice upgrade that you should feel right away. I added the rear sway bar that you mentioned and it helped control the rear of my 72 burb then I added the front sway bar and wheels and tires to match.
I would did it again in a Chevy heartbeat. |

Re: rear sway bar or not?
I added a Hellwig rear sway on my 70 SWB. I really like it. Especially when romping on it around town and coming in a little hot off the freeway into a cloverleaf. The truck bites and holds really good. It changed the everyday drivability a lot for me. I think it would be a huge upgrade for a lifted truck with an even higher center of gravity.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
I added a stock (1-1/16") bar up front a while back and it made a major difference.
a few months back I added a rear bar. It also made a big difference in handling. It tightened up the rear very noticeably and makes the truck corner much better... the rear does seem to be more inclined to get loos on hard corners... one sandy left in particular near my old house. I don't know if the rear bar helped when towing or with a heavy load, but with a full bed and a 16' trailer loaded down with woodworking machines the truck ran perfectly... I can only assume that the rear bar helps distribute the load in the bed. Short version, I'm happy with my rear bar and would suggest others give one a try. |

Re: rear sway bar or not?
I have a swaybar on both front and rear and mine is lowered 3.5" front and 6" rear. i mounted my rear one according to the cpp instructions, my only concern is it hangs low. i can fit a beer can under it at the bushing. Havent driven it yet so i cant tell you how it handles yet.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
Mine is lowered 2" from and 3" rear. I have a stock front bar and added a Camaro Hotchkis rear bar. It works well for handling, especially on the on/off ramps. It really took a lot of lean out of the truck. I've pushed it pretty hard and never gotten the rear to slide yet.
The only downside is if I try to add throttle through a tight corner the inside tire wants to break loose moreso than before.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
The first time it took almost 20 minutes. Now, that's been shaved to 14 minutes from the corner of Houghton and Catalina highway to the overlook at Windy Point very early on a dry Sunday morning when the local constabulary aren't about.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
I am an ACE member. I have these two toys for the twistys around Tucson and you can find me out breaking the speed limit on any Sunday before 7 am when it isn't raining or cold enough for black ice. Provided I'm not out torturing the SCCA guys. And yes, before you ask, that is an NASA track legal LS2 powered Mazda Miata.

Got a build thread on that Miata? I usually frown on miatas, just a personal hatred for em , but I'm intrigued by this one lol

Re: rear sway bar or not?
Less lean doesn't equal more traction.

Re: rear sway bar or not?
1. Less body roll means a more constant size contact patch between the tire and the pavement which equates to lower traction losses in cornering.
2. A correctly sized anti-roll bar also prevents the inside tire from unloading due to CG shift about the roll center reducing weight transfer from the inside tire to the outside tire maintaining traction on that tire. Anti-roll bars are not about "more traction", they are about reducing the loss of traction when G loads shift away from vertical. |
