Whats a 71 swb worth

Going to look at a 71 SWB, auto, 2WD, PS, 307 truck in the morning. Talked to the owner tonight and he said it runs fine and doesn't have much rust. Is asking $1600. Seems pretty cheap if it is how he described. What is the price range for decent drivers?

It's worth at least that as long as nothing is particulary hacked up on it.

Sounds like a reasonable price but, how much rust is "doesn't have much rust"? Be sure to take a good look under the cab and bed. Love those SWB trucks. Good luck!

I'm looking for SWB also.
Based on the description I'd jump on it.
Can't rely on owner's description though.

I drove an hour to look at a 70 today.
Owners said no rust, rebuild engine, and bed needed minor repair.
I got there and and there was no bed floor.
Rust holes were creeping up the sides of the bed.
Passenger rear quarter had rust holes.
Motor had burn oil crust all over it like it had never been washed.

Good luck!!

Check the fenders, rockers, cab corners, mounts, doors, radiator support, inner fender, around the windshield for rust.

I bought the 71 in my avatar for 1500 it had the original 3.07 2bbl turbo350 powersteering and its an original air truck. It needs rockers and cab corners an some tlc but its a solid base to start on!

UPDATE

Looked at the truck today. Faded red paint, ralley wheels, started right up and ran good, just rebuilt tranny. Bed with wavey floor and lots of dents inside. Appeared good from 20 feet but the more I looked the worse it got. Rust covered with riveted on patch panels and bondo starting to crack in cab corners and rockers. I guess for $1600 you can't expect much but there is always hope. Really wouldn't have been a bad deal if I replaced the cab, but I have too many other projects so I passed.
