1/2 ton vs 3/4 in cab fuel tanks
I just bought a 71 3/4 ton 2wd truck that hasn't been started in 8 years. The entire fuel system must be replaced due to the great fuel we have to work with these days. In looking at a new tank I can only find 1/2 ton tanks. I didn't know there was a difference.
I know there's are different versions due to the emissions but is that the only issue I have to worry about? Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks

Re: 1/2 ton vs 3/4 in cab fuel tanks
There is no difference between 1/2 and 3/4 tanks. 72 tanks had EEC but that is the only difference I am aware of.

Re: 1/2 ton vs 3/4 in cab fuel tanks
Thanks for the reply. I'm going to go ahead and buy the 1/2 on tank but both companies I talked with said they will only say it will fit a 1/2 ton. Both said they are looking for a 3/4 ton supplier but cannot find one.
Thanks again.

I don't know what your ultimate goal is but have you considered relocating it inside the frame?
If not I'm sure you could source a good one someone has pulled |

Re: 1/2 ton vs 3/4 in cab fuel tanks
I've thought about it but I'm kind of a purist on the old trucks.
I may try to coat the tank and reuse it but its pretty nasty. The sending unit has rusted so much it was hard to get out. I've never seen one do this before.

Re: 1/2 ton vs 3/4 in cab fuel tanks
You might want to try a Spectra tank from that outfit in Canada. I nearly bought one myself but I ended up having my tank cleaned and "renewed" at a radiator shop. I'd also try GMC Pauls and Classic Heartbeat.
If you want to stay original, I'd suggest getting a tank off of a member. Several people on the boards have their old tanks and might just give those away. I'd get it shipped in a wooden crate though. |

Did the 3/4 ton trucks have EEC? I know they didn't have smog pumps. At least not in CA.

I believe I remember reading that the 71-72 3/4 tons use the older non EEC type tank where as the 1/2 tons switched

Yeah 3/4 ton trucks have NON EEC tanks. They use the same tanks as 1/2 ton trucks. Classic parts sells them for $150

Re: 1/2 ton vs 3/4 in cab fuel tanks
concur - 3/4 ton trucks were non-EEC through at least 72. If you are installing a 1/2 ton tank from a 70-72 (I BELIEVE those were the trucks with EEC), make sure you use the correct filler neck grommet. I am pretty sure the EEC tanks had a 2" i.d. grommet whereas the non-EEC tanks had a 1/5" i.d. grommet. However, IF this were the case, I find it hard to believe that nobody carries a "72 3/4 ton tank".... LMC sells a 67-72 non-EEC tank and that should meet your needs - and note that they do NOT state 1/2 or 3/4 ton for the non-EEC listing, whereas they do list a 70-72 EEC "1/2 ton" tanks separately. Personally, I'd still lean toward rebuilding or finding a decent one in a junkyard and coat the inside. Nothing (for me) ever seems to be "quite right" when I order stuff like this from LMC or several other mfgrs. It is just a tank, so I think that with the correct grommet, as long as you purchase a non-EEC tank, you should be good to go.

Try Rock Auto. They sell Spectra Premium, which has received favorable comments on this forum, at a pretty decent price. I don't have any personal experience with them, however.

Re: 1/2 ton vs 3/4 in cab fuel tanks
Thanks everyone for the replies. I' m going to "renew" my tank and hopefully that works out.
It is a non-EEC tank, I do know that for sure. This truck is from central Ohio and winters has played hell with the fuel and brake lines. I'm going to start a new thread with some questions about that. Thanks again!
