Center console question
When did they start offering them (I'm guessing 69), and did the cup holders start happening in 73 or was it earlier on our style trucks?
I'm not talking about the buddy bucket ones, just the stand alone versions.

Re: Center console question
Seat belt consoles in 69. Cup holder consoles in 73 thru at least 79, possibly 80.

Re: Center console question
My '73 has the seat belt holders, not cup holders.

Re: Center console question
I wonder how hard the GMC console emblems are to find now? I did a decent job of cleaning mine up, but it's not like there can be many sitting in junkyards...

Re: Center console question
That's interesting. Truck or Blazer? Are buckets listed on the SPID? Does it have 3-point seat/shoulder belts? I could be wrong about the 1st cup holder year. I had a new 79 Blazer that had the cup holder console and remember that changing in 80 or 81.

Re: Center console question
Cup holder console did not appear until 75 or 76.

Re: Center console question
Here is a console I pulled from a 75 blazer...seatbelt style. In 73 they went to a reinforced hinge and the three bolts on the back make it easy to spot

Re: Center console question
I guess I'm really not too old to learn something new! Does anyone know how to tell a 69 console (at least early) from a 70-72?

Re: Center console question
Nope. Consider this trivia...
My original 69 console has the 2 halves of the body riveted together rather than screwed. The rivets are not in the same location as the screws, but rather inside the console. This is also clearly shown in the 69 portion of the assembly manual. Then later in the manual it shows the screws. I can try to get pictures if interested. |

Re: Center console question
I'm pretty sure cupholder conshole was '76. I know that '73-'74 trucks had the seat belt holder. I put a '79 console in mine for the cupholders and have my original restored if I ever want to go back.

Re: Center console question
I had no idea these consoles continued unchanged (or so it appears) into the next series of trucks. I'd imagine that makes them easier to find. There are reproductions, but for some reason they're quite different.
Mine 70 has the two halves of the body riveted. If I recall correctly, they were unpainted originally. I did not see any benefit in taking the two halves apart when I restored and painted it, so it's still riveted. I was going to take laquer thinner to clean the rivets off, but they're far enough down between the seats that you don't really see them anyway.

Re: Center console question
I guess I have never seen a 69 console Every console I've seen has had fasteners all the way through. Very cool info. Maybe off topic, but since the original question has been answered it's always nice to get "spinoff" info

Re: Center console question
Yup, I probably learn as much, or more, from the spinoff info as the topic relevant info. I guess my NCRS background rears its ugly head on occasion.
