exterior mirror help

this will be one of the first of many, many questions...

i have a 60 c-10 that does not have rear view mirrors, and i'm not sure it ever has.

i want to mount the 3 hole ''triangle'' mount style mirrors, and was wondering if there is some kind of template, or measurement to do so.

if my doors did have this style at one time, the previous owner did an excellent job of patching/filling the holes, i can't find a trace inside or out.

any pix/help is appreciated ...thanks

Re: exterior mirror help

"Triangle mount" mirrors as you call them are not very common on the passenger side, but as far as I know, ALL trucks had them on the drivers side. I say all because even trucks factory equipped with the larger West coast style mirrors had the standard triangle provisions in the drivers door plugged with filler screws.
Have you pulled the driver door panel and looked inside your door for the mirror mounts? I bet they are there. If not, I am learning something here.

Re: exterior mirror help

the mirror mounts are on the inside of both doors.
somewhere I have a picture of the bracket from inside the passenger door, I just can't find it.

If no one has the measurements, I have a passenger door I cut up to figure out where the measurements for the bracket are, I will try to get them for you in the next day or so....

Re: exterior mirror help

I just installed a mirror on the passenger side of my rusty 65' fleeter. After taking dubious measurements from the drivers door I started drilling the door only to find a plate backing the door skin. I took off the side panel inside and saw that there are predrilled holes in that plate backing but they are at a different location than the drivers door by about a quarter inch. I assume it is for mirror angle to the driver's point of view and that there must be a template to use to drill them because you can't drill them from the inside. At any rate, it is next to impossible to get a nut up there to screw the mirror bracket into. I decided to drill through the backing plate with a hair smaller drill and use it as the nut for the screws to screw into to secure the mirror. I know its a bit of a jerry-rig but it worked pretty good with stock screws and I didn't care since the door is half rusted out anyway. good luck!

Re: exterior mirror help

thanks guys

i pulled my drivers door panel, and sure enough the bolt plate is there.
the nuts have been welded solid, and filled over. so now i have to decide if its worth it to try and drill it out or just start new.
how strong are those plates attached to the inside panel? any chance of it breaking free?

i have not checked the passenger side yet

The passenger side doesn't have the nuts just the predrilled holes. the plate seems unconnected to the door skin, probably to the door jam but the way I did it tightens the back plate against the exterior door skin and solidifies it. Not the best way but it worked good for me.

Re: exterior mirror help

Excellent set of install graphics...Thanks
Say, I have 63' chevy 1-ton that has the 64 cab on it, I believe it was original that way...I bought it off a farm and I don't think it every was licensed for the road so am sure they never put a newer cab on it. Do you think it was a very late 63' benefitting from the new retooling or what?

That is what the vin tag on the door jam says...also, when I pulled out the heater core it was stamped 63' and "Harrison" on the end so I think it was the original core possibly. jon

Re: exterior mirror help

I would think it would be the same on the drivers side but it would take someone to go measure a drivers door to make sure. I'm nowhere close to my truck to measure for you. Sorry, wish I could help more.

yes
i drilled a small hole to check the location after measuring, and it was dead center. i did the same with the other two holes.

another person has told me that both sides are not exactly the same, so i willl do the drivers side the same way...with a small guide hole

Re: exterior mirror help

done and done...

turns out (on mine) the plates and holes were in the exact location as the graphic on both driver and passenger sides.

i ended up drilling out the threads on the driver side, and ''stacking'' the new locknuts on top of the old plate nuts. i am pleased with the look and new visability of my new mirrors

big thanks to (aerotruk63) for the schematics...

on to the next project

Re: exterior mirror help

i decided to run a magnet in the bottom of the door to try and get the drill bit tip that broke, and found a door catch that im guessing pushed through...and a couple nails and a nut.

no treasure to speak of
