Closed Knuckle Steering Question.
I have a 68 K10 chevy with a closed Knuckle dana 44 spicer front axle. I have the same steering arm as pictured, and was wondering if anyone knows where a guy could get the cone washers for this? They go on 7/16's studs.

that steering arm is the same as mine and my studs are 3/8" if i remember right. closed knuckle are probably different.

These are readily available at most reliable truck shops that deal with running gears/chassis, rear-ends, transmissions. I used Inland Truck because they are local. I know they have shops through the mid-west. I sent them a single to match(as there are different sizes,tapers and configurations. I replaced all of mine in my rebuild within the last year. I will try to track down a number, as I do not have it off the top of my head. Bruce

I swapped to a newer axle with disc brakes, made it easier for power steering as well.

I would say they were loose? where did you get your studs? do you remember how long they were?

Kimble I couldn't tell you if they were loose or not as I didn't realize there was a problem until they totally failed. There was no indicator leading up to there failure. I try to remind myself that 40 + year old technology was never designed for the usage and trends in use today. I checked the torque more to hopefully catch an impending failure before the fact as I don't believed the failed because they were loose just under designed for bigger tires and power steering.
On a separate note, I found your built tread about 2 weeks ago. I found it to be quite inspirational! It's motivated me to get started on my neglected 63 K10 short fleet side. I've owed it for 27 years. It hasn't been on the road since 2006. If there was a law against old truck abuse, I'd be doing time......... |

It appears the originals were 3/8 by 1 11/16 long. I had the steering arm and knuckle machined to accept a 1/2 stud. They also enlarged the steering arm and cone washer (?) to go with the 1/2 studs. That was a K10.
I also checked my K20 suburban, it also has a closed knuckle 44 and it has 1/2 studs. I have 2 of the 3/8 cone washers (?). Lord only knows why I save everything........ The picture is of an original stud. Again why I saved it, who knows........ |

did we hi-jack this 2 yr old post? lol. i used my old stud washers as pictured above and went together fine, the shims are what i can use as i have a pic in another post.
