Help... Manual hub Tear down

1966 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4

Cant seem to get this bigger gear to come off the axle? I did remove the snap ring. but the big gear slides up to the back side if the grooves on the axle shaft and stops? I did the passenger side just fine... what am I missing? I am thinking it should just slide right over the end of the axle right?

any help would be appreciated...
