Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Hey I thought I should pass it on that GovDeals is currently auctioning off a 1972 GMC 9500 tractor.
Looks in decent shape. http://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa...98&acctid=2455

When I saw you were in WA I wasn't even gonna click on the link. That thing is about 30 miles from me. I've bought about half dozen cars/trucks off GovDeals and PublicSurplus.

Yeah, my little truck (1997 Ford Ranger), I bought off Public Surplus.

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Interesting truck.
Same here Bill, just about 30 or 35 Miles from me. I might just check it out, although it's at $1500 now and Reserve Not Met Yet. I would only buy it if it was a steal though. Are you interested in it? Bill

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Yeah, they are calling it a "5 Speed Manual Transmission with Overdrive" but I believe it is either a 5 X 3 or a 5 X 4. My best guess would be a 5 X 4 and 5th-High should actually be an OD Gear.

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
My guess a 5x2 since it's a 318. But it's just a guess.
Bill, I may ride over and give it a once-over next week. I'm about like you, deff interested if the price is right. Even still got my class-A CDL, so I'm ready.

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Cool truck. I would like to take something like this and put a flatbed on it to haul equipment. It's probably pretty heavy for general hauling though, and the 8V71 is probably way overkill.

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Bill,
I may have a chance to check it out this Thursday or Friday. But I won't jump ahead of you on it, since you did see it first. If you did want to pass on it and if it did go cheap, I would probably have to drive it home with Farm Tags. My old Chauffeurs ran out when the CDL's kick in, lol. I'd have to check for sure, but I believe Farm is exempt from CDL. Bill

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Well, I got a chance to check out the truck today. It was pretty impressive. Now I didn't thoroughly check it from end to end, but with what I observed, the worst part of the truck is the Sheet Metal, but yet I didn't notice anything that can't be reasonably fixed. The best part by far was the Engine. It sure sounded real healthy and sweet. I would say that the low mileage could very well be original.
I was talking to a couple a guys about it and one guy told me that they bought it in 1990 and used it very little. Mostly for parades and once in a while it hauled a heavy piece of equipment. It is a 5 X 4 like I figured, but it has a Shifting Sequence that is very different from what I'm familiar with and one I've actually never seen before. It also has pretty heavy specs with 12 Fronts and 44 Rears. I took some pictures while I was there, but same old story, I don't know how to post them on the forums. If y'all would like to see them, I can either send them to someone that knows how to post them, or y'all can try to finally teach me how, lol. Bill

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Bill------Thanks for the tip and the video. Yes, it sounds like brand new, and being a municipal truck, the mileage is believable . Still has original floor mats . Bid is at $3050 now so people are waking up to a classic . I guess I'd be happy if I advertised my '70 Chev and could get that kind of money .
I imagine the 4 speed auxilliary has a pair of splitter ratios, so you can drive it like it has a 10 speed or 5 with 2 speed axle . The gear changes sounded even and heard no grinding . Our local utility had one with similar color with an Allison back in the '70s. |

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Loved the video. Haven't heard one of those run in years. Hope you get it Bill. If only 30 miles from me would have to have it.....hmmm.
Is a municipality selling it? |

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
It is owned by the City of Salem, VA. I didn't realize it at first and drove right past the place, lol.
Even though I'm not that far from it, I never knew they had a 9500 there. They've owned it for close to 25 years now.

You're right about the 10 Speeds. As mentioned, it's one I've never seen before. Here is the Shifting Sequence: Aux - Main D - 1&2 2 D - 3 O 2 D - 4 2 D - 5 O Bill

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
The Truck just Sold a few minutes ago. Last Bid was $8,550. With the 5% Premium, it finished off at $8,977.50.
The Bidding jumped $3000 in the last 17 minutes. I don't know who bought it, but I hope they stop by here sometime. It's a real good truck as mentioned. Bill

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
By the way, from piecing together a few bits of information, I pretty much believe that this was an Ex-Military Truck and at the same token, I also believe that the Low Mileage is Actual.

Wow, and I hoped I might get it for less than 5K.

Re: Anybody want a 72 GMC 9500?
Were you bidding?
C10 - C90 Bill and I both went to see it in person. Looked to be 100% unmolested original. There were a couple places of rust through but nothing major. Tires were all virgin and matching. And, probably the only Detroit on earth that had no oil leaks. All around nice truck.
