I believe its to stop harmonics and chattering.

Yeah stops vibration, same deal with mine. Can't find anyone else who has them, I think they were only there for a few short years. The louvered ones are better IMHO because they're able to keep colder. And the spring doesnt really help, mine are like a dumptruck's brakes, as far as sound goes.
