Leaf Spring Bushing question
I know someone out there knows this. I am replacing rear leaf spring bushings on a 70 1/2 ton 4x4. The bushings I bought have not come in yet but are supposed to be for the 1-1/2" OD leafs. I finally managed to get the rubber and the inside sleeve out and there is still a thin outer metal sleeve left in there. If I remove that I will have a 1-1/2" hole, if I leave it it is 1-3/8". Is this sleeve part of the old bushing that needs to come out? And will the new poly bushings just fit inside there without a sleeve or will it come with a outer sleeve of it's own?
Never done leaf springs before and I need your help. Thanks |

Remove it. It's part of the old bushing. You will not need it with new poly bushings. Make sure you grease the new poly bushings real good. It will not and does not come with an outer sleeve.

Thanks Jim
Do the outer sleeves have to be pressed out or can they be beaten out? What kind of grease is recommended for the bushings? Thanks |

I beat mine out with a cold chisel and hammer. I used waterproof wheel bearing grease. (makes it easy to slip in and controls squeak)

Just wondering about the grease. These are the black kind that are supposed to be a mix of poly and other stuff and have enough oils in them to prevent squeeks. Energy Suspension on their web site says you don't need grease for those kind. Should I use it anyway? Probably won't hurt.
