Welding caps on U-joints
I have a 76 dana 44 we are using as a donor axle for our 70k10. The new axle u-joints (Moog 371)have inner c-clips that don't seem to want to go in. I have shaved the inside of the yoke to get them in but they don't seem to seat properly. I have seen on another forum that guys will spot weld the caps to the yoke to keep them from walking out...does anyone have experience or advise on this. If we do this should I put the greasable joints in? Thanks in advance...Rick

Re: Welding caps on U-joints
Did you grind enough so you can run full circle snap rings, instead of the half circle push in clips? I have tack welded my caps, before doing this mod. It does work, but makes your next joint change, a bit more of a pain.

Re: Welding caps on U-joints
I hadn't heard of installing full circle clips. Is it fairly easy to modify for this?

Re: Welding caps on U-joints
Just get some snap rings from the hardware store, and make a little room for them with a die grinder. Those stock pop in clips, always came out when I wheeled mine.

Re: Welding caps on U-joints
Thanks guys, I think Obijuan might be right. The clips don't sit flush against the yoke. I am taking them apart again tomorrow, and hope I can make a good connection. I have a die grinder to install the full clips, so that might be the best idea...I would rather not weld them if I don't need to...Rick

Re: Welding caps on U-joints
Well, I changed the Moog371 joints over to AC Delco greasable ones, and the c clip groove is slightly wider??...now the u joints have more side to side movement I"d had enough by then...regular c clips and a tack weld on the caps and they are done...Thanks for the help Turp and Obijuan...
