69-72 Blue Bowtie Hubcap Emblem Paint?

Recently picked up a nice dent and ding free pair of the 1/2 ton stainless steel hubcaps and am wanting to repaint the emblems and the black highlights. At some time the blue has been repainted by brush which looks pretty bad to say it kindly. Tried to look in the FAQ section with no luck, what is the paint # or color wording for both the blue and black coloring? Thinking the black would be a semi-gloss, not sure about the blue. Not doing a 1,000 point restoration on them, just want them to look reasonably close to original.

Re: 69-72 Blue Bowtie Hubcap Emblem Paint?

I just did this a little over a year ago. Krylon True Blue is a virtual match to the chevy blue bowtie of '72. I used SEM Pro Satin Black for the cog and black surround. I did all that after my caps were powder-coated (rims too). Used very thin pinstripe tape to mask the details.

My avatar shows the results. I'd call 'em pretty good 5 footers. Not show quality, but certainly good enough for me. I'm pretty happy with the results. About 24 hrs work for me to do all 4...but I'm slow. That included detailed scuffing of only the painted areas.

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. Will have to pick up some Krylon and the SEM paint. Only have the pair right now, looking for the open 4x4 style in same condition.

Re: 69-72 Blue Bowtie Hubcap Emblem Paint?

Thanks for the info.
I have a set of 4x4 chrome wheel covers but they have yellow bowties on the rear wheels, so, i suspect '73-'75 vintage.
They match my Wheatland Yellow '72 Shortbed so it's not bad.
Just found one at a salvage yard with a blue bowtie but the others were gone from the truck. Still looking for more.

not so fast Ive had several 72 with the yellow, low miles ,original owners so at some point in 72 they ran out of blue and put what they had in stock yellow on at lease on ca trucks also the black license plates in small towns would be still available because they did not change to blue till all the black ones were gone

Re: 69-72 Blue Bowtie Hubcap Emblem Paint?

I had not considered that they had changed from blue to yellow before the end of '72.
Do you know if there is a primer, and if so, what kind of primer is under the paint on top of the chrome? Or was the paint sprayed directly on top of the chrome?
Must have been some special paint to adhere to the chrome.
