2004R Help
I have been thinking about this swap for a while (current tranny is a TH350). I have read every thread (I could find) and followed up on most of the ext. links…this site has a wealth of information and some very helpful members.
Recently, I stumbled across a 2004R with a good calibration code and the stock converter (2200-2400) and picked it up. So now I am trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start and will follow some members recommendations…drain plug and temperature port. My question is…does anyone have specific information on connecting the TV cable to the 2bbl Rochester carb (engine is a stock 307 with the stock 2 bbl)? Not the bracket for the TV cable, Monster Transmission offers a generic bracket that should work. I was looking for some help with the actual connection to the carburetor linkage. The image below shows some specific distances that “need” to be respected. Does anyone know if something is already out there for this carb (linkage adaptors are available for other carbs) or if I will need to swap out/customize a linkage from a junkyard donor? Thanks for any info/help |

Re: 2004R Help
Both the large and small base plate Rochester setups from bowtie overdrives states Pontiac only, and I'd suspect it's because of the progressive linkage design of 3×2 induction. You should call bowtie overdrives and explain the situation to them. Even if you don't purchase their set up they are likely to aid you in finding the right tv bracket. However, I do expect most will say to just switch to a 4bbl.

Re: 2004R Help
Good to read someone else is smart enough to not just put a 700r4 in their truck. 200R4s are great trannies. You'll love it. Better 1-2 gear ratio, no driveshaft or yolk modifications needed, no pri$y control box needed. I pulled one out of a Pick and pull yard, put a Transgo shift kit in it,TCI lock up kit, purple super servo and a Grand National converter and it has held up to well over 500HP in my Chevelle. I am keeping my eyes open for one for my 67 truck.

Re: 2004R Help
I called Bowtie Overdrives today. They seem to be nice people to deal with.
Their tech said that yes the adaptors were based off of Pontiac carb linkages, but that in their kit they could provide that linkage as well. So I would need to "probably" (he did not have our specific linkage in mind) grind off the existing linkage…drill and tap the shaft and bolt on the Pontiac linkage and then I would be good to go with the rest of the kit. Also the two linkages (Pontiac and existing) may be close enough that swapping the linkages is not necessary. He did not specify but I believe that this is the kit from their web site http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=407 But, now you guys have me thinking if its easier/better to swap out the 2bbl and intake for a 4bbl and intake. I could probably find OEM TV brackets/linkages in a junk yard for the new carb. I would end up with more ZIP and less MPG…it is just a basic daily driver/work truck. Thoughts? |

Id recommend a qjet. Keep your foot out of it and your mpg wont suffer.

Re: 2004R Help
If I were in your position, I'd take a serious look at being able to install the bowtie overdrives setup on your 2bbl. If you find that's not easy or practical, then consider the swap. Swapping to a 4bbl isn't too hard and offers a few benefits. The drop in mpg would be fairly negligible. In the end you just have to decide how much time and money you're willing to invest.

Re: 2004R Help
All the dimensions are in his first post, Its simple enough to make the part from just about any piece of scrap metal with simple hand tools...

Re: 2004R Help
leftybass209, The idea of destroying my nicely running 2bbl has crossed my mind. The kit is not cheep, I could possibly find a qjet with an intake for something in the same ballpark price wise. And if the qjet already had the TV linkage and bracket then it would become a very ease swap and setup of the tranny.
hamjet, you are correct. It is just that with the sensitivity in adjusting the TV cable I am a bit leery of not getting it right and toasting the tranny. Thanks guys. Not sure what I want to do... |

Re: 2004R Help
There are plenty of sites explaining how to properly adjust the TV cable, If you go the route of changing intakes and carbs, even if it comes with the TV cable and carb bracket you'll be right back at square one on adjusting it on your vehicle. Google "TV cable adjustment and read, read, read. Soon it will be apparent on how easy it will be, even making the proper adaptor to fit on the exsisting carb linkage.http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.htmlhttp://purplesagetradingpost.com/sum...o/700R4p1.htmlhttp://www.transmissioncenter.net/2004RTIP.htm

Re: 2004R Help
Adjustment is just pulling all the slack from the cable when the vehicle is at idle so it starts to pull on the rod as you engage the throttle. The 2004r and 700r4 transmissions got such a horrible stigma from people that didn't understand them when they came out it tarnished their reputation into some holy grail of a tv operating system. Even bowtie overdrives goes overboard in making you think if you don't have the absolute angle and their guided cam design you won't get 5 miles before your transmission explodes; it's simply not true. There's plenty of experienced people now that have designed set ups to work with these things great. Hell, I was worried about my transmission because it had no tv cable, no lock up, and an unknown amount of miles on it and was leaking from every seal when I got it. Had it inspected and the trans guy said nothing was wrong with it. Myth and legend is what the uneducated live on.

Re: 2004R Help
Well...if I do not have to fight against the magic of the TV cable adjustment…then maybe a homemade bracket is doable…at least worth a try. However, now I do not have a good excuse to upgrade the carb and intake!

Re: 2004R Help
Give it a shot with what you have. if all works out and you get the jist on how it works, you can always upgrade to the 4bbl if you want.

Re: 2004R Help
I think that makes sense too...once I figured it out correctly then when/if the carb is upgraded it will by easy to make the new adjustments. Seems like its going to be a fun project. Thanks!

Re: 2004R Help
One thing I can add is when I put in the 200 4R behind a 330 hp 327 I worried a great deal about the geometry and linkage so as to not burn up the tranny. Honestly, it wasn't that big of a deal - during test drive if it shifts hard (late) or doesn't down shift as quick as you want just get out and adjust it. I went the long dollar route, but in retrospect I could have made much the same set up. I find the 200 4r is durable and a excellent upgrade replacement for any 2wd 1/2 ton truck. G.

Re: 2004R Help
Thanks for the info on the TV cable and setup. I am getting more confident on doing it myself. Did you buy a lockup kit as well? I have read some posts from members that made their own setups?

Re: 2004R Help
This is how I wired mine, post #5.
http://www.streetrodding.com/forums.view/33400 Super easy and cost about $15. It lock up when it shifts into 4th only. It also unlocks if you hit the brakes. |

Re: 2004R Help
Thanks for the link! That seems pretty straight forward. I will need to figure out the 2004R factory wiring as I still have the original ext connector and three leads. Maybe when I open it up and take a look I can make a harness for the insides to match the setup on the other post #5. I might add a toggle ... for a Tow/Haul mode.

Re: 2004R Help
From another site, I found the following: A late model TH-200-4R has 3 wires: 2 are used for the TCC solenoid, and the other is to signal the computer when 4th gear is engaged.
Maybe I will be able to setup the wiring per the diagram without changing anything internal to the transmission. |
