Gas Tank Relocation-Thoughts?

So, I have a 72 C10 that I am looking to restore to its original beauty and was curious what everyone's thoughts were on relocating the gas tank from the cab to where the spare tire would be (for example). I want to update everything but keep things looking original for the most part. Backwards thinking I guess. I was just curious about what everyone has done or has seen. I have thought about replacing the tank and keeping it in the original location in the cab and have also thought of relocating the tank to the rear while keeping a mock filler neck in the factory location for the stock appearance and having a hidden filler neck for the relocated tank elsewhere (flush with the base of the bed or something). Thoughts?

Try the advanced search function, there are a bazillion threads on this, blazer tanks, Boyd fab tanks, falcon tanks, Mustang tanks, Poly replacement tanks. Not to mention filler locations, in the bed floor mount, in the stake pocket, in the side of the bed flip door from a doner vehicle, and last but not least the behind the rear marker light and rear tail light fillers.

My last fuel tank conversion was using a poly plastic blazer tank in the spare tire location. If I were to do it again, I would use a custom fabricated steel or aluminum tank. The poly tank is ok, but it has a tendency to warp, and it has no internal baffles, and the fuel gauge bounces around like crazy as the fuel sloshes around inside the tank.

last weekend it would have need nice to tilt the seat forward and put my gun cases there instead of in the bed but I couldn't because some idiot at gm put the stupid gas tank there instead of putting it on the frame under the bed as is should be.

Yelp and your guitar, it's also the perfect place for luggage when traveling, I would do it but I'd like to keep the gas filler in the stock location. I have a step side and routing the plumbing would be a pain, also would create traps in the line. A rear mounted filler behind the license plate would be what I'd do, if I didn't have a dealer bumper.

when I finally get around to moving mine I'm planning on keeping the filler neck in the stock location and using 2" exhaust pipe to route it to the tank. I'm sure it will slow filling but I have a land rover discovery too and they are the slowest filling vehicle in existence so I'm not to worried about it.

If you are planning to go fuel injection and needed to fuel pump, then yes...But for stock carb and weekend driving. I don't really understand why the hassles. I am doing a 5.3 LS swap and I am still keeping my stock fuel tank.

I am about to go fuel injected and I actually use my truck, besides the stock tank has rust inside and needs to be replaced anyway.
I drive my truck to work at least twice a week and just got back from taking it on a hunting trip. some of the things I carry in my truck I would prefer to have stored out of sight behind the seat.
if the stock tank works for you, awesome. for many of us it doesn't

My 72 c10 sb step side, tank out of a 66 mustang setup for EFI. SUMMITsending unit, tanks inc pick up tube with any in tank pump that works for your application. I used Aeromotive.

I have a 69 Camaro gas tank in the rear, works fine. gas tank in cab takes up leg room but I'm ok with both

Let me perhaps refine what people are saying.

As a safety measure, it's probably a waste of time and effort. By the time the tank is deformed, so are you.

As a convenience measure to gain space in an already small cab, that I can see.

So maybe we're all saying the same thing but no one is listening to the other. It is the Internet, after all.

You do not gain any leg room removing the gas tank. The top of the seat back still hits the back of the cab regardless of whether or not the tank is there. Unless you angle the seatback 90 degrees the seat won't scoot back any further.

Doing that myself, I never cared for the tank behind the seat. We are fabricating a 30 gallon aluminum fuel tank to fit inside the class V hitch and run new fuel lines.We are going to have it set up for carb and drop in pump for the later 8.1.

Removed the filler neck and both side doors so we can stream line the body and place the filler hose under a latch in the bed.Have pictures soon.

The stock tank worked for "everyone", till people who only know newer trucks with tilt forward seats, are used to driving cars, or extended cab trucks starting driving them. Those of us who have driven them all along have done so because we appreciate the superior engineering put into these trucks. A classic truck you can still daily drive nearly 50 years later. Trucks have always been tight in the cab. Truck guys always accepted that, or they install caps or tonneau covers

Very happy with my boyd's tank, which I only swapped to during the LS conversion. The tank in the cab didnt bother me other than the occasional smell. It also kept me from smoking in the truck which I'm happy about now, having quit about a year ago.

Having the added weight over the rear axle seems to help smooth out the ride and it likely hooks up better (if I was still trying to go fast in it).

Not having a spare tire sucks, though. It hasnt burned me yet but I know one day it will

I agree it's a waste of time... to those who people feel that way. But I feel differently and love my Boyd's tank as well.

Do you gain leg room, no not really. You can store quite a bit of stuff back there, because there is really no where else to put it. For me the big thing was room for stereo equipment, amp, subs, etc...

But that's the beauty of this site, and truck guys in general, there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to tank location (okay maybe there is, but I won't get into that now). What works for some may not work for others & vise versa. It follows the same arguments as lowering/lifting or leaving stock. Customize or restore. We all have our own ideas of whats cool to us.

I think it wouldn't be restored back to it's original beauty.
